Re: ESPN: Why did Steve Spurrier fail in NFL?
Dan needed the money these other guys brought in. He couldn't have been an owner without guys like Drasner

Right! Could you imagine how things would have been if it was Dan who had backed out instead of Fred?

Re: ESPN: Why did Steve Spurrier fail in NFL?
Spurrier wasn't an actual failure. He should have kept at it. I remember his press conference when he was first hired as HC. A Washington Times reporter asked him about Stephen Davis and how he would be used, Spurrier said "We're gonna have a lot of draw plays for him". Later on in Davis last season, he didn't even come anywhere of using Davis in the way Norv Turner and Schottenheimer did.
The mere thought of pitching and catching in the NFC East is a crazy thought. In the NFC East you have to run the football and then run the football. Spurrier never got that. |

Re: ESPN: Why did Steve Spurrier fail in NFL?
Why are we talking about a college coach who hasn't coached in the NFL for close to 10 years now..

because it looks like chip kelly may be making the jump, and if you wanted to speculate as to whether or not he can succeed, perspective on what went wrong with previous college phenoms may prove insightful.
and cause it still part of redskins history. but i don't know, next time you bring up a draft prospect i'll ask why we're discussing people who aren't even in the nfl, or whatnot. if you're not happy with the thread, you're free to ignore it. |

And the draft is relevant, when Kiper and McShay come out, the draft starts to become important. Also I made that thread back when we were looking and a lot of us thought our season was done (even Shanahan)

Re: ESPN: Why did Steve Spurrier fail in NFL?
Honestly the real reason I was so adamant against hiring Spurious was because we already had a good coach who was only in his first year, here. One who understood there was more than one side of the football and had a radically different philosophy than The Ole Ball Dud.
Maybe if he was hired right after Turner was sacked and taking over his players then I wouldn't rue his name? He would've come into a team better suited for his supposed offensive wizardry. As it stands now the hiring of that arrogant buffoon stands as the highlight of Snyder's short sightedness.

This is pretty interesting and I'm glad I've read through this thread.
That's just me though... I'd be second in line! Very interesting stuff.

Some guys are just college coaches. Spurrier was just a college coach.

Re: ESPN: Why did Steve Spurrier fail in NFL?
Spurrier is a douche. Knowing that the great Joe Gibbs slept about 2 hours per day for years to hone his craft, you have to be a grade A douche to come in and think you can win with no work behind it. And that's exactly what he proved to be. Screw him and his stupid visors. Ol ball coach was a sackless weasel.
