It's alot like the Flacco contract. IMO unless the guy is in that top 5 echelon of QBs. The team is sacrificing quite a few good players around them for their contracts. Your giving these guys 15% of your cap on average, for the life of these deals.

I don't see how this is like the Flacco contract. Flacco just won the Ravens a SB, while Romo did another one of this major choke jobs last seasons. But whatever, I don't mind seeing the Cowpukes making terrible decisions.

Sure, Romo is a good QB, and better than what we had. Is he worth the money being paid? No. Is he a choke artist? In my opinion, until he stops collapsing in big games and having "fluke plays" in those games ... Yup.

I, for one, am glad they are saddled with him for the next 2-3 years. Just means they will get Cowboys fans will get their hearts broken year after year after year ...
Yeah I'm with you on the next 3 years. I'm excited we are building a strong team! Httr

In all fairness though, it IS possible that Romo and the Boys could put together one good season and roll to the Super Bowl. It's not like they don't have any weapons. They are a playoff caliber team and anything's possible.

Could it happen, maybe, but honestly their window is closing for a couple of reasons:
  • Their core players are getting older.
  • They are in a constant struggle between coach and GM/owner, for example if they are 4-4 at midway next year, there will be a lot of talk about Garrett being gone.
  • TR as JR as said, is prone to a bad play at the wrong time, a lot of people look at their December run last year, but if you look at the end of the Cinci game, TR threw gift picks that Cinci defenders dropped. Had they caught one of those, the last game of the season would not have been a win and in game for them (i guess by my logic I am glad Cinci dropped those picks LOL).
  • Finally, their salary cap situation for the next 3 years is very prohibitive and they will be forced to let players that are important to their team see FA rather than re-sign them. For example Sean Lee is a free agent after next year, and 35 of their currently signed players hit some form of FA in 2015, including Dez Bryant, Demarco Murray, Tyron Smith, and right now they are at 135M(FOR 21 players!) for 2015, even assuming TV money kicks in, they are going to be restructuring forever at this rate.

So, if they struggle this year, Garrett will get canned, and the new coach will have Romo, and a hellacious salary cap to deal with.

That puts alot of win now pressure on Garrett and Romo. I am hoping that I will be loving it.

for those who are curious, we have 30 contracts for 2015, totaling 99Mil
(contract stats from where else? overthecap.com)

Year in and year out the Cowboys are always overrated. Fact is they haven't had a winning season now since 2009 and they're only getting older. They're 22-26 the last 3 seasons. Not really playoff caliber in my book.

Im sick of listening to the whole argument that Dallas has never had a good player except Tony Romo since he has been there. Thats just outright nonsense. The Cowboys in his early years had better talent around Romo than RG3 had this past year. Given the injuries to key players this past year (Garcon, Davis, ect), that makes it even worse.

QB's arent overpaid in this league. They are the most important piece. But unless they have won you SB's or even gotten to some conference championships, you dont give a 33 year old that amount of guaranteed money. The Cowboys are already in salary cap purgatory, now they are in even deeper with a QB that will be in decline. At 33, I doubt he is going to get better.

The Cowboys need a major overhaul, so anytime they keep an aging vet and sign him to an uncuttable for 3 or 4 years contract, they are making matters worse, not better (Better if looking at it from a Redskins standpoint).

Since the whole Tony Romo has never had a good team around him argument is always used. What changes this year then? What exactly are you seeing in Dallas that makes you think Romo will now get over the hump?

Since that argument dictates that they wont win anything, why not move on and try to get your cap in order while drafting some young pieces who will EVENTUALLY win?

If you want to defend the move because you hate Dallas and think its funny, then be my guest (I do). But you seem to be saying that its a "good move" for that franchise... I couldnt disagree more. They are better off losing 12 games instead of 8 for a couple of years and building with higher draft picks.

Plain and simple, Romo's contract is a Vinny move. And Vinny moves have been proven to not work in the first year, and cost the team dearly in dead cap in later years. Im glad its now the Cowboys doing those contracts and not us anymore.
So was flaccos deal a vinny move too? He was the highest paid QB ever lmao.
And I never said he's played on bad teams, his numbers are great if u actually looked at his stats. He puts up top 10 numbers every season.

A big difference is that Flacco is 28, been to the playoffs every year, and won the SB. His numbers might not be great, but in the playoffs, I would take him every year.

Compare that to Romo, who will be 33 next month, has had stellar stats in the regular season, and proven blunders in the post-season/critical games.

Romo's contract smells a lot more like Vinny move, except of course if he were the GM of the team Romo was on he would scapegoat Romo, and badger him till he left. BUT, if Vinny were to write a contract to bring Romo to the Skins, that would be a Vinny move (ie aging vet, looks good on paper, lots of money in cap play).

Flacco at least won a SB and has a bunch of playoff wins. I'm fine with him getting paid.

Romo with one playoff win, it's just hard to justify making him a $100M QB in my mind.

How many playoff wins and SB wins a guy has doesn't matter when you're determining his worth. Teams don't even consider it. As they shouldn't.

Age though is something that all teams consider, and there's a big difference between 28 and 33. The final four years of this deal are going to be mostly noise, but I think the Cowboys are going to regret somewhat giving Romo starting quarterback job security through 2015. I don't think they'll be very competitive in our division over that timeframe.

I think the bigger news here is that the Cowboys are all in for 2013. After that point, they're basically going to be the post Al Davis Raiders. They can only improve their team through the draft and they are going to lose veteran pieces that could still help because of contractual issues.

As I stated earlier. I think either Jason Witten, DeMarcus Ware, or Miles Austin will be gone in two years.

Austin will likely be gone by this time next year. But it won't be just Austin. There will be a max exodus.

No but the fans and media sure do. Fair or not, it's always going to be a big part of the discussion.

No factors in the market are part of the discussion though.

The discussion can be as smart or as dumb as we want it to be. While it's factually correct that Tony Romo has been a starting quarterback a long time to have one playoff win, that stat is consistent with a dysfunctional team. I know it's fun to argue Romo's culpability in the Cowboys lack of success, and it's frankly funny to watch the Cowboys not change anything about the way they do business, Tony Romo's career record and playoff record aren't really a very major part of the story. It's more of an "it is what it is" thing.

I think the state of the Cowboys roster and future winning potential is a much bigger story, because that's what will determine whether they just wasted a ton of money or not.

I think we all (myself certainly) thought that the Giants dumped a ton of money into Eli in 2009 when he was a mediocre player on a mediocre team and couldn't understand that $100 million deal. But of course, that extension looks great now. The Giants look a lot better because of Eli's contract going forward. I think the Cowboys are hoping for the same thing, and I don't think they are going to get it.
