Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
Don’t do a thing as an org. When asked by the outside we simply state we need our team leader back as soon as possible. I would be firm that a trade is not an option. I would tell silverblunt privately at this time we don’t have the flexibility but wait until after next season to see what we can do...can Trent play his first full season in four years?

Don't think be practicing right now anyway as he's recovering from the offseason procedure he had for cancer.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
Extending Brandon Scherff would free up the necessary cap space to give Trent an increase, and the team may still have a lower cap number than it does currently.
I'm not saying they should necessarily give Trent an increase, just making it known that contract mechanics are such that extending Scherff will increase the cap space by more than enough to pay Trent if we chose.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
Trent Williams is the best Redskin over the last decade and it's not even close. He is a franchise staple and a top LT in football still today. Andrew Whitworth is 37 and is still a very good starter. Letting Trent go with roughly 4 years of very good level of play at a position so crucial is not a wise decision. When he is out of the game, it is clear as day seeing his impact.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
A new deal for Scherff will lower his cap # this year significantly. He's currently on the books for $12.5, that could easily be cut that in half for this year.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
Just tossing out a general question, does anyone feel good about breaking in a rookie QB with anyone other than Trent protecting his blind side?

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
No. which is why its good we have him under contract for 2 more years. also, given trents missed significant time the past few years, he'll likely not be protecting our rookie QBs blindside atleast 4-5 games this year, regardless of whether we give him a new contract or not.

No! And both he and his agent know this. There isn't a viable option on the roster to replace him. That said, they don't have to. He's not going to not show up for the next two years... They'll probably come up with a way to get him extended, but if it were me, anything I give him above what he is currently owed will be based on incentives given the amount of time he has missed over the last three years. |

Yet he's asking for even more money? No thanks. If he can make it through 2019 without getting hurt, then maybe its worth extending him a couple years. But it would be completely foolish of the team that is already paying 20MM towards a player who isn't going to play this year to commit even more money to a player who will more likely than not miss significant time this year. Those who voted for the Redskins to give TW more money are not being realistic. They are allowing their fond memories of TW in his prime to color their judgment on what the team should do now. If a team is foolish enough to make us an offer we can't refuse, then we should take it. Otherwise, don't negotiate with him. Make him play on his current contract this year. If he stays healthy, then great. He's earned a new contract. If not, then just let him play out his contract and let him walk in 2022

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
This is so tough for me because TW has played hurt, generally kept his mouth shut, and played like a beast for years.
On the other hand, he's another 4:20 break away from a year long suspension because of past transgressions. Personally, I do the middle ground. Restructure to throw a few extra bucks his way for being a good soldier over the years, but no way in hell do I give him a new contract. I was really hoping TW would just ride off into the sunset as a Skin, but here we are. He DOES have us over a barrel with Christian (and GOD FORBID Flowers) looming, but hey, every game check you miss, let's see how you feel then. Don't want to establish that precedent.

Re: Trent Williams holding out for new deal
Even with a Down year he was 15th in pass blocking grades, only allowed 1 sack folks. 1 all year.
