Re: Redskins, Cowboys could go “nuclear” over cap mess

Here is a snippet from the Examiner article link in the Redskins News area:

Quote:
....General manager Bruce Allen said the Redskins presented their case for two and a half hours in front of special master Stephen Burbank Thursday, hoping to recoup money $36 million in salary cap space the NFL took away from them. Allen said he did not know when they would hear a resolution from the arbitrator.

"We wanted to present our case and we were able to present part of our case," Allen said.

As for whether or not there will be another hearing Allen said, "You have to check with the league or [Giants owner] John Mara."
There had been rumors (vague on another -not ES) board that a compromise was reachable. Since they didn't show up here, I didn't put a lot of credence in them, but I wonder if this statement by Bruce Allen underlies a point that Mara particularly is keeping a settlement from being reached. Remember he made very pointed statements leading in to the league meetings.

I'm not an attorney, or even admittedly very smart, but my two cents:

Burbank will determine that he has no authority over the dispute as the NFLPA agreed to the penalty. It's not a CBA issue and he should enjoy recusing himself. It's curious to me that it's gotten as far as it has really, but maybe he's giving the teams the opportunity to prove that he does have the authority to arbitrate.

On a related note, Garcon's not worth what we're paying him. It reminded me of VC and management that isnt steering the ship, but just taking orders. I thought it was out of character for the organization's new business model. How is Garcon's contract related to the 'nuclear' penalty? Because i hope that the penalty stands and it is a serious slap to the face of the organization. I want it to remind them that the path to the playoffs isnt through overpriced free agents coming from systems with Peyton Manning delivering the packages.

I dont agree with penalty on principle, but i'm hoping that it slowed down what i viewed as a bad turn in our planning.

I'll say I'm guessing either Burbank advises he has authority and passes judgment, or has partial authority, what I really wonder with your scenario is could the two teams have mentioned that "if" Burbank cannot hear the case then they "will" file in the courts to have this issue heard unless their is a settlement offer? Now they are waiting for Mara?

So now Burbank is buying time for Mara and whomever to decide of they should make an offer or not or be faced with this whole mess going to court.

I'll never understand the whole rooting against your team thing, but oh well.

I'm preparing myself for the dark cloud by pre-emptively selling myself on the imagined silver lining.

By saying "Because i hope that the penalty stands and it is a serious slap to the face of the organization. The "punishment" by the league : "It's like getting a ticket for going too fast on a road a week ago and they changed the speed limit today"

Unfortunately that happens a lot here, from people wanting the Redskins to lose for a better draft position to people wanting a Skins player to screw up because they don't like them as a person. We got some crazy fans up in here.

Could have saved ourselves 2 first rounders and a high second by losing a few more games. I don't understand how you or anyone else can justify 3 wins in a completely meaningless season being worth three stud players. Maybe we should have made a deal with the devil and given offered Kerrigan, Orakpo, and Trent Williams as tribute to go 8-8 last year. Worth it?

Could've, would've should've. Nonsense. You play to win, not for a better place in the draft! We're trying to build a winner, and you don't do that by losing. Ever.
