If Rex is the starter next season, I would conclude that Shanny is tanking games to get in position to draft Barkley.

I really can't take another season of hearing about "tanking"

Make no mistake, I'm talking about Rex. Beck was a backup. He showed in 3 games why he was considered as such and returned to his regular place. Grossman was our starting QB and was the worst in the league outside of Indy.

I'm not dead but this team is dead to me...but now that McCloughan is here they may have new life!

Jay Gruden = Zorny McSpurrier
Kirk Cousins = Next Grossman

The teams needs to clean house at QB. I don't hate Rex but it's time to move on completely

At some point you have to let others learn the system in my opinion.

Absolutely. The team needs reason to have hope, both from the perspective of players inside the locker room and from the fan perspective.

With Rex at QB there is just no hope to compete for a Super Bowl. The longer you keep him, the greater risk you run of having productive players want to leave the Redskins and the greater risk you run of having your team be a complete afterthought for prospective free agents.

When quality free agents hit the market, they pick their team as much as the team picks them. Good free agent players have options, and if you go into next year with Rex you give them no reason to choose the Redskins.

I think my bigger concern, and I alluded to this a few weeks ago, is that Rex is a "known commodity" for the Shanahans and as such he's an easy crutch to go to. I think whoever their QB is whether it's Flynn or Hoyer or RG3 or Tannehill, whoever it is, they have to-as they say-"ride or die" with him. It's the only way they can truly take that next step

From that perspective I can see how they would view him as a crutch, given his familiarity with the offense, etc. But in terms of trying to keep their own jobs, keeping Rex as the starter would represent the biggest possible risk for the Shanahans.

Last year they kept Rex after giving him a three-game audition in their system. Everyone, including Dan Snyder, was at least somewhat willing to give them and Rex a chance to show that he could improve in their system.

But now after this past season where Rex showed he turns the ball over just as much in this system as any other, keeping him around would mean he HAS to make the leap, or if I'm Snyder the Shanahans would be history. I mean given the knowledge we have today, how can you take the position that Rex is likely to perform well this coming season? Keeping him would be riskier to their jobs than trading up and selecting a rookie.

Re: The "Inside Word" on the QB Search

I'll say this: trading a bunch of picks to draft a 22 year old quarterback isn't mortgaging the future. It's betting the future on a single entity.

Trading a ton of picks for a guy like 26 year old Jay Cutler or 31 year old Carson Palmer is mortgaging the future. But if you are going to develop the asset yourself, its not the same thing as trying to trade a ton of draft value for a "finished product" who is already making a ton of money.

It's scenarios like the second that fans who don't get it dream up. It's that kind of "we need to get a quarterback" discussion that makes actually tries to separate having a quarterback from winning games. Trading a bunch of picks for a higher pick is just what you do if you don't like your positioning in a draft.

Whats the most recent comp for a coach/GM or coach or GM clearing house at quarterback three years in? I'm sure it's happened at some point, but I can't remember a recent case where the QB position got wiped entirely by an existing coaching staff.

I'm not against the idea, I am just thinking that it doesn't ever happen.
