Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

Cousins was fine, he missed a few throws, but was also under more pressure last night than he has been all season besides against maybe the Jets when Trent Williams was out.

What I really don't get is why the offense isn't opened up a bit more. It seemed like we had the most success against Dallas when Kirk was finally allowed to start flinging it around some towards the end. Where was THAT the rest of the game? Why after 2 turnovers inside Dallas territory were we not going for the jugular?

He did not "play well." He avoided turnovers, that's about it. To me, that's kind of the base line. His yd/attempt was ~5.3 - that is abysmal under any circumstances. (Matt Schaub's against Miami was 6.7, Blaine Gabbert's against Chicago was 6.1, Hasselback was 6.5, Hoyer was 6.8; At the other end of the spectrum Wilson was 10.7 and Tyrod Taylor was 10.1.)

You can say many true things about KC's performance - some good true things, some not so good true things, and some flat out bad true things. However, you watched a very different game than I did if you think he played "great" or "well."

BTW - I am here all day, every day. Regardless of KC's play.

Even if you throw out a fake audible just to see if some of the extra guys will back off.
Yeah, that 3rd and 1 was a terrible waste. Gruden/Mcvay should have called something different, and like you said, KC should definitely have audibled or taken a timeout. either way you don't run that play when the D is stacked up like that.

I think kirk deserves a good contract

Luckily the WP will not be involved in those contract negotiations. Although im sure they will be looking closely at espn's qbr when determining if he deserves to stick around. Lol

Back to full-on "KC is who he is and who has always been." Good enough to hang around the league for many years. However, we have seen his ceiling and bumped our heads on it.

Because 30 games is enough to see a qb's ceiling. Please. 30 games on a pretty poor team. I think a run game, better oline play, and a weapon or two more just might call for a re-check on that ceiling.
Edit : check out drew brees numbers after 30 games. Pretty amazing what happened to that guy after he got some help.
Brees had less td's. More int's. Less yards.
Whether or not cousins ever becomes brees is not the point. It is that 30 games is not enough to call it as you think you see it. There is plenty of ceiling left for Kirk.

I think we watched it a bit differently. I remember the one pass to Reed that was high and in front, but overall KC made the throws he was told to make. If you want to see what his ceiling is you have to put the game on his shoulders and say make it happen.

Well Sir i respectfully disagree.. I was actually encouraged with his play, and ecpecially is moxie at the end of games. Also, since your throwing out numbers, please tell me the quarterback ratings of each qb that played against Dallas this year. Then tell me how Kirks rating compared..

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I think Cousins will be back at least for 2016 because honestly what else better do you expect to get in this offseason? We could always end up drafting a QB for the future, but I wouldn't be comfortable with a rookie starting on a .500ish team right out of the gate.

Unless there are some veteran QB's hitting the open market that aren't going to be demanding crazy contracts, what else do people expect to get this offseason?

I am not even saying Kirk is the QB of the future/franchise etc etc....just that he is likely the best option for 2016.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

This sums up my feelings on Cousins pretty much exactly:

Quote:
I can’t say that Kirk Cousins was bad last night; I also can’t say he was good. He had a couple nice throws; the touchdown to Jackson, a pass over the middle on third down to Garcon (a bit behind, but he stood in the pocket well). The one thing I think we’ve learned with Cousins is that he’s like a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL: dependent on those around him. That means some games he’ll look solid and other games he leaves you wanting, and needing, more. He’s not going to get hot over the next four games and lead a division title run just with his arm. I think the Redskins know this -- and I think Cousins knows this as well. Cousins remains the best option right now for Washington at quarterback; no NFL person would tell you otherwise. His strength has been his efficiency, but to win consistently that way you need more from other parts, notably the run game. I do like that he led scoring drives at the end of the half and the game.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

That assessment is pretty spot on. Over the course of an entire season I am willing to be Cousins will always grade out about middle of the pack. There will be a handful of games where he shows a little bit more to where people will think he is becoming something else, but then he will go and have average performances, and I am not talking bad games, more like games like last night where he wasn't what anyone would call "bad" but there were openings and opportunities for him to be really good but in the end he ended up looking okay.

With that said it is still an entirely different question than "Can we win with Cousins" because I would say Cousins has shown enough that if we build a contender around him we can. People forget that Colin Kaepernick took a team to the Superbowl, Trent Dilfer, Rex Grossman, etc etc etc......what did all three of those teams have in common? Stout defenses. They were DEFENSE first. Well hey, what is Scot Mcloughan known for? How does he build his teams? What is his DNA? There ya go.

Re: Who is Kirk Cousins?

I think Cousins is much better running the hurry up. Teams are less likely to have time to call blitzes on him. And he doesn't seem to overthink things.

I wish Gruden would put him in the situation more often.

Obviously Kirk is a guy who will need guys around him to be successful, and that's a no brainer, because there is only about 4 QB's in the NFL right now that can single handily carry a team on his shoulders.

That being said.... Kirk is being asked to do JUST THAT. Which should be the main concern going forward. It is critical to get the execution of the run game polished.

You would think that we would go to this every once in a while but we never ever see it unless it's at the end of a game or half. He obviously runs it well. Last night would have been the perfect time to go hurry up as a change up and to press the tempo. These are things that we see yet Gruden who's getting 5million a year doesn't???
