Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

I haven't voted on this one because it is pretty tough.
Given good blocking, Portis is probably a 1300 yrd rusher...that is hard to replace.
I don't care what Denver did with a bunch of RBs...this is Washington and our line is completely different right now...so...if we cut him, we'd obviously have to replace him with someone not on the squad now...which means a trade for a player or a draft pick...but since his contract has a poison pill...that is not possible...so we either lose a really good player and the best RB blocker in the league for nothing or we keep him and tell him to keep his mouth shut.

Until we have linemen that can block like portis, we should probably keep him...screw the money...

Thinking as typing....maybe we could trade him for a starting lineman? and just pay Portis his bonus making him tradeable?

I am sure there are teams out there that have solid lines that need a consistent RB like Portis...at this point, I'd rather have a better line than Portis

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

he really died once he got here, he had over 3000 yds rushing his first 2 years in denver, and over 30 td's, and to think a coach would willing give that up shows how much he cares for portis, i used to want him back but he will be gone next year

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

Portis' stats as a Redskin (prior to this horrible season):

2008- 342 carries_1,487 yards_4.3 ypc
2007- 325 carries_1,262 yards_3.9 ypc
2006- 127 carries_523 yards_4.1 ypc (std 7 gms: injured tackling after INT)
2005- 352 carries_1,516 yards_4.3 yds
2004- 343 carries_1,315 yards_3.8 yds

You don't throw away production like this from a guy with no off-field issues just casue he's an ass. You whip him into shape, get him motivated and get him on the field.

exactly, couldnt agree more. it seems as if when portis sees a wall of defenders in front of him, he dives to the ground before he even reaches these guys. toughen him up, put some spirit back into him and work him like a mule. he has potential. maybe he isnt as fast as he used to be, but he is as strong as an ox. as you get older you have a better sense of how a defense is going to react to your running. one of those intangables everyone always talks about that i wouldnt trade for anything.

maybe he is too far along to be changed, and we have to get rid of him. maybe we should get a couple of young go getters who will perform. but instead of dumping him along with the money lost in the salary cap, see if he can improve. why waste the cash available, because it is always so tight, and theres a lot tied up with this guy.

also id take anyone anyday that has no off field issues versus some guy that every six months has to have a talk with the league office. (portis or anyone, doesnt have to be him) you get paid all this money to play football, and you throw it away because of a life once lived. i know its hard for some, and this doesnt apply to all, but id take someone who is focuced more on life then some star player who has to carry a gun to the grocery store, or has to be armed to the teeth to go to a bar. just senseless sometimes. alcohol and guns do not mix.

You forget that a player has to want to do all these things. Portis cannot be apprehended and forced into the training room. Ultimately it's all up to him. He hasn't wanted to do things recently and it shows.

Running backs don't last forever either. This season will mark his ninth year in the league. He's already past the usual shelf life of RBs in this league.

Portis = Edgerrin James, Shaun Alexander, etc., etc.,

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

People keep asking who will give us 1,000 yards without Portis.

How about Jahvid Best? When I imagine him in Shanny's one-cut-and-go offense, I see pre-Redskins Portis, not 2009 Portis.

He'd be nice but maybe a 1st rounder.

My late round pick would be Hardesty from Tenn.. anyone know where he's projected?

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

You're defending him...i get that. and its cool.

But we have a new coach now and we are supposedly "rebuilding/reloading", so where does a guy like him fit in? He doesnt work out, doesnt practce, doesn't do OTA's or team meetings....so wtf is the point with him?

How do you get him motivated is a better question. Because his GUARANTEED Salary doesnt seem to do the trick.

And you don't see issues with his character?? 99% of America wanted Michael Vick to get a lifetime ban, but PORTIS defended Vick's action by saying what he did was "no big deal"...i dont care myself, but Portis admitted to dogfighting when he was growing up, so it not like he is a saint...no matter what you think

No, don't want him back next season. Release him, let him go corrupt and divide another team's locker room. He's been aight for us, but he really only gives 100% when he wants to. When was the last time you saw him turn back inside and try to get extra yards instead of just scamper out of bounds....it's been a few years. Bring in a couple young guys who are hungry and willing to be team players. With a better O-line and a better system, we'll be fine.

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

I voted no simply because of his production decline last year but I am curious to see him in Shanahan's system again. Also, the crap he pulled on Zorn he wouldn't DREAM of trying under Shanahan. If he's back, I'd anticipate he's going to be in top shape, be in attendance for 90%+ for OTA's and will be practicing on a regular basis. Plus his direct line to Snyder has been shut down by Shanahallen so that issue is moot.

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

I think an uncapped year is the greatest thing for the Skins. It is the only way we can dump CP. I love his blocking skills and aggression, but his running skills have deteriorated way to much. At this point he has the physical tools of a 3rd down back but the contract of a 1500 yard rushing threat.Cut him and take the financial hit. If there is a market for him, good for him. If not, try to bring him back at 3 years 3 mil and get 15 snaps and a couple receptions a game out of him.

Re: Do you want Portis back next season?

I voted no, but its a very aprehensive no... I like everything Portis has done for this organization. I really do. This in by no way, shape or form is a "good riddance", because I think he's meant a lot to the franchise... but I just dont think he has it anymore, he's an average runner, still a great blocker and a tough guy...but the fact that he's not what he used to be, make him not worth the headache for me...

I'm a little curious about what he has meant to the organization as a whole? To me one year of sabotage takes away the average good he has done. It's funny how everyone talks bout his great blocking, yet it was lack of practicing that hurt the blocking scheme while he was in this year.

Clinton was taken out plenty of times due to his LACK of pass blocking. He wouldn't step up (directionally) in order to block the pass rusher closer to the LOS, not leaving JC enough room to step into his throws... Just wanted to add that since I think many people have forgotten about that. Add that to his not practicing which messes with the lines continuity and learning how to block for Clinton, I say he has to go. IMO. Too much downside, not enough upside.

Will work on making my comments more concise in the future!

"lost a step" "lost a step"...... put a sock in it....

look at f*kin Fred Taylor....
We could use a veteran like Portis to help whatever rookie we draft with some good ol veteran knowledge.

Shanahans running system.
Portis.
Rookie.
Ganther.....Lookout.
