If you have a first round pick and you need a quarterback, you're going to draft a first round QB, not trade the pick for a 4th round QB.
Not necessarily so. A quarterback's stock can increase no matter what round he was drafted. Those scouts and GMs who have seen film of Cousins play are wishing that they had selected him before he fell to the 4th round. Mind you, Kirk Cousins was projected to be a 2nd round pick. Cousins has outshined the Ryan Tannehills and the Brandon Weedens, QBs who were taken in the 1st round of the draft. Neither of them have been nominated for any awards this season but Cousins has been nominated for 2 awards in back to back weeks and because of that his stock has increased.

Charley Casserly said the other day that right now in this moment in time that Cousins is worth at the very least a 2nd round pick.

Hmmmm. Good points. But even if he is worth a second rounder, we can only seal a second round pick if there is competition between multiple teams to grab him. We don't stand in a strong negotiating position; that he's a back-up fourth round pick weakens our stance regardless of what he's worth (there's a lot more variables in a trade than the player's value; player value doesn't always translate to trade value). On the other hand, he has a fourth round contract, which makes him more appealing (of course, if his stock rises that much, he'd be crazy not to ask for a new contract and\or demand a trade, both of which would lower his trade value).

Since its a rookie contract, the new CBA governs a lot of what he could ask for. I could be wrong, but I dont think they can be offered extensions until year 3 and even those dont do away with year 4. Any new deal would be an extension starting with pay for year 5.

This new rookie pay scale makes the value of tradable rookies go up imo. You have them at a good contract for 4 years with an option to pay up and guarantee a year 5. If Cousins is traded in the offseason after year 3, then he still has a cheap contract for one year and a 1 year option at high dollars before you have to sign him to a large guaranteed contract. So 2 years to decide if hes the one you want to shell out that "cant miss" contract to.

I hadn't thought about that. That would increase his value.

The way the scouts, coaches, and GM have been finding talent there is no reason to trade away our most reliable alternate to RG III. We need him to be here for at least another year.

Plus what's the rush in trying to trade a guy who could be this value able to our team.

The 2012 draft class may go down as one of the best in Redskins history. We don't even know what we have in the oline talent we drafted yet.

Re: Cousins Value Skyrockets,Jets Fans Want Him!!

Supposedly this topic has been on discussed to great length for the last 2 days on The Sports Fix with Kevin Sheehan and Thom Loverro. They talked to Charley Casserly today about it. Casserly seemed to think Cousins would fetch at least a 2nd round pick (perhaps two 2nd rounders if a team was desperate enough). But Casserly also said backups like this are usually liked or disliked based on college tape, as opposed to preseason or backup work in their first year(s).

While I wouldn't just give away Cousins, the one thing to think about is no first round picks over the next 2 years plus no 2nd rounder next year. The Skins will be in another big deficit with the salary cap. If a team (Kansas City perhaps? The Jets if they figure out how to get rid of Sanchez?) decides that Cousins is worth two 2nd rounders, it might be too rich not to take advantage of.

Don't get me wrong, it's awesome to have a capable backup that we might have with Cousins (one game does a great backup not make), but if a team is willing to throw the farm out there for him, I'm not sure the Skins can afford to turn the deal down. Plus with a guy like Matt Scott from Arizona that could be available in the 4th round, you might be able to needs with the 2nd rounders and have someone who Rex Grossman can coach up the would-be backup.

We have our 2nd rounder next year. It was this past draft we lost our 2nd rounder. Just missing next years and 2014's first round picks.

We have a extra 5th rounder via the Patriots for the Fat Boy trade.

Thanks for the correction. I will still argue that if a team is willing to trade two 2nd rounders for a 4th round pick, that it could be too rich to turn down.

Cousins has shown why he was projected to be a 2nd round pick. I think the Redskins may be able to get a great deal for him. If Philly can get a 1st rounder for a bum like Kevin Kolb, then the Redskins can get a nice draft pick for Cousins.

This team has way too many needs to hang onto 2 young starting QBs. I wouldn not hesitate to ship Cousins to the Jets for Revis and a 2nd rounder. We need all of the youth on defense we can get, especially a stud middle linebacker to take over for fletcher. Safety and cornerback is a bigger need at this point. If we don't make the playoffs, it will be due to our defense this year which needs serious attention and considering the lost cap money we won't be able to do much in free agency so draft picks are golden.

We can get all of those things in the off season with out trading Cousins. We have talented S Tanard Jackson, S Brandon Meriweather, and promising young S Jordan Benstein all coming back next year. As well as Orakpo and LB Keenan Robinson coming back. Adam Carriker is also coming back. LB Rob Jackson has stepped up in place of Orakpo potentially making Orakpo trade bait. Cb's rookie Richard Crawford, Chase Minnifield and Cedric Griffin. We are not sisters of the poor on defense where we have to make a desperation trade of Cousins right now. Plus there is Free agency and renegotiation of current deals to free up cap space. I am of the glass half full.

Is that you, Vinny?

Because of injury, Revis's best days are behind him. We don't want Revis. Might as well bring in Bruce Smith.

ummmm . . . disagree . . . Revis is only 27 years old . . . after he is back from his ACL, he will still be one of the best CB's in the NFL . . . don't forget, RGIII has already come back from the same injury . . . does he look slow?? . . . i would take (and the offer will never happen anyway) Revis and a 2nd any day of the week for Cousins . . . and i love me some Cousins (and love having a good backup QB) . . . but Revis is a STUD at a position we desperately need help . . .

Let's not delude ourselves here. For one, the Jets aren't trading Revis. Two, we don't need Revis. What we need are draft picks. Although Cousins stock has increased with his competitive play, I doubt if this particular offseason is the right time to trade him.

I don't think you know what you are talking about. I'm sure you said the same about Adrian Peterson after he tore his ACL and MCL just last year.
