Re: Redskins and McNabb Agree to Contract Extension

Regardless of the numbers this year, Donovan is not an average QB. He's a top 10 quarterback with top 5 leadership qualities operating in a new system behind a bottom 5 offensive line with a bottom 10 running back/wideout roster.

I apologize for the run on sentence, but i wanted you to read all of that at once, because that is the real reason we are struggling. And the only reason we are competitive this year is because of his leadership skills.

Is this a value laden deal for us, maybe not. But when was the last time you interviewed for a job that Bruce Allen was interviewing for?

I hear that McNabb had to take a cardiovascular endurance test before getting the new deal.

I personally don't care how much we invest in him. As long as there is no salary cap, it's Dan Snyder's money, not mine. I'm just glad he'll be here for another couple years so thats one less thing we have to worry about. I'd like to take a QB in the 2012 draft; groom him for a year or so and then bring him in. The time/amount don't really bother me at all.

This is spot on. So long as we don't end up in "cap hell" (which, according to all the pundits, we've been in for years), what difference does the cost make?

My guess is you bring in a serious young prospect or two over the next few years, groom em behind DMac, and then keep DMac as a vet backup. Now, if DMac suddenly gets hot, he'll get his incentive money. If not, it's stability until the true savior arrives. We've still got a ton of team to build before we're going anywhere, IMO. This locks in one piece, and it shuts down all the gossip for a while. I'm fine with the move, even at 80 mill.

Now, if we re-sign captain Rabach for big money...

Re: Redskins and McNabb Agree to Contract Extension

Even though this is supposedly Bruce Allen's deal...the timing of the announcement being just hours before the monday night matchup with his old team reeks of Snyder.
(not to mention the wad of cash)

That is from the current CBA and may be a part of why the deal got done before 4pm today. Just means any increase in this years salary doesn't get pro-rated ala a signing bonus.

Overall, McNabb was gonna get paid, and this seems about right to me, it's not Peyton Manning money, but it is reflective of a multi year PB contender, and top (not elite) qb.

Re: Redskins and McNabb Agree to Contract Extension

Right now I'm hearing this is essentially a 2-3 year deal. The total money likely to be paid out is much less than being reported, kind of like Haynesworth and his $100 million

But still trying to confirm things.

If the contract is that big his mentor Michael Vick loves him even more today because it drives his stock up even higher.

Man dammed if you do dammed if you don't. The Skins finally make a great move for the future on a future Hall of Fame quarterback whom has plenty of tread left on the tires and people are still bitching. The Redskins will be a contender for years to come now that we have him signed. Kudos to Bruce Allen for making this happen. Now its time to wipe the floor with the Eagles tonight!!!

I like it, allows us to bring in a QB & groom him on the bench for a few years. Next year we pick up a big time free agent WR IMO.

Re: Redskins and McNabb Agree to Contract Extension

I don't know if this is a good thing or a bad thing. It's just insanity.

I mean, how much money are they planning to eat on the back end? McNabb obviously won't be in Washington in 2014, and it's not uncommon to completely backload a deal thats simply designed to keep him off the open market until it sets itself after the next CBA is done.

It's worth pointing out that McNabb's job security is a week to week deal. But his financial security basically makes his roster spot safe through 2012. Which greatly undermines anything either Shanahan would try to do to improve him as a player.

It's insane how easy this organization throws around it's money. The redeeming grace of this deal is that we've seen that no amount of financial security is going to affect Shanahan's QB plan for the future.
