The fewer suitors, the lower the price.. Supply/demand 101. If the Dolphins, Browns and Seahawks have a QB in free agency they won't be in play to trade up for Griffin. Knowing that they aren't bidding against anyone the Redskins won't up the ante, they can sit and wait the Rams to come down to their price (within reason).

Comparatively, now since all are in play the Rams can play offers against each other to raise the price. I tend to think it get done this weekend at a two 1sts, a third and fourth.

The key player is Cleveland. If they decide to meet their need in FA instead of the draft, the value of the Rams pick drops to whatever the best offer we could/would make. So the Rams want the trade asap, while all the teams are in play. BUT it is a two sided deal, and the Skins/Browns/other potential buyers want to see how the competing buyers fill their need via FA. If the Browns sign Flynn, and the Skins sign Manning (for example), then the cost to Miami went down. None of the bidding teams are likely to buy the pick, before a real market for it has been set.

if a team wants rg3 now, they will want him in april. if a team wants flynn now, they will get flynn in march. if a team wants manning now, they are foolish

I think we're all well aware of the fact that free agency doesn't immediately equate to winning a Super Bowl but there has not been a Super Bowl won as of late without contributions of free agents. Just do it wisely instead of name shopping, which is how Shanny and Allen have done since coming to DC. Don't freak out if we bring in a VJax or someone with a big name/big contract.

Let me judge this sentence by sentence:

- I would like to think that but you'll find people on this board who still want to go out and get the big names

- I agree

- I won't freak out, but I don't think its the answer, and it can back fire and go under the 'dumb FA' signing column rather than the 'London Fletcher success' signing column

I think very few people understand the concept of a balanced approach to offseason acquisitions. Meaning that you need to have a good draft and good FA signings. As always, people always want to go to the extremes, they think that we SOLELY focus on the draft w/o signing FAs, or the people that think we need to go after the big name free agent.

The way I see it, the Redskins have two options, in which they can have the balanced approach:

A.) Trade up for RG3, use the limited # of picks you have this draft, and use free agency.

B.) Sign Manning, possibly trade down and use your picks for this year, and maybe use free agency.

I don't think you can't go wrong with either of these approaches. Both have risks (as with everything) and both have a good probability of working out well.

Wonder if we'd have any interest in Cortland Finnegan. Tennessee used the franchise tag on Michael Griffin and won't offer Finnegan a contract.

Big names aren't an issue either.. scheme fits and work ethic are... I.e. Jason Taylor was one of the best DEs but a terrible fit for what we do..

And those that don't want free agents should pay attention to football. There is no problem with adding through free agency.. it is hard to build solely through the draft in today's game.

True, you go and sign a FA or two at the most. You don't go out and sign 3+ FA's and make them starters. Who was the last Super bowl team to do that?

For all intents and purposes the Browns are out...for now at least.

Based on... what the Rams want? What the Browns plan to do at the position otherwise? A little A a little B? Or something else?

Honestly...based off a source that I don't usually rely on because he's not the most reliable. But he is a former Browns exec and does still have some connections there and he tells me they have told the Rams they will not trade the 2nd first round pick, and they're looking elsewhere for QB anyway.
