True, they are both young and good.

What I am trying to figure out now is why the Skins drafted a non-pocket passer in RG3, had a ton of success in running the read option in 2012 and now suddenly are trying to convert him to a pocket passer.

What the F was wrong with our RO offense in 2012? 1st place in the NFCE, a home playoff berth, and Rookie of the Year wasn't good enough, after years of suckitude?

He needs to be able to do both. They are not so much converting him as they are helping him to develop better skills as a pocket passer.

Wait until the opener. Then we'll know more about how Gruden plans to use RGIII. The Skins aren't showing much of their offense in preseason.

People called it a gimmick. They said it would kill our qb.

They're the same people whining now

Also Team Griffin was against it and he calls the shots now.

Re: Why I'm Not Gonna Panic About Our QB

On May 22, Griffin Jr., the man who molded his son in the image of his own quarterback idols of the 1970s, told The Washington Post: “I just know that based on what I know Robert can do, he doesn’t have to be a runner as much as I saw last year. To me, you’re paying these [receivers] a lot of money to catch the football. I’m his dad — I want him throwing that football, a lot. A lot.”

“I love my dad,” he said. “I talked to him after I heard what he said and I told him thank you because that’s what he is supposed to say as my father. He does not want to see me running around out there on the field. He wants to see me throwing the ball. He was the one that trained me, so he knows what I can do and Coach knows what I can do. It is not that I disagree or agree with what he said, but I was proud of the fact that he stood up and said something.”

Any sense that Griffin’s father was operating as a lone wolf — his rantings wholly disconnected from his son’s own opinions — disappeared this week, when Griffin III told ESPN 980 in response to a question about the read-option offense, “I’m a quarterback. . . . We want to throw the ball. And you think pass first, run second. That’s just the way it is.”

The Griffin men, it should be clear by now, are not to be muzzled, unless it is by their own free will.

For Robert Griffin Jr., being a quarterback’s father isn’t always a silent partnership - The Washington Post

i dont think there is much denying RG3 is stubborn and wants to do things his way. I love RG3 but he needs to be open to coaching more than he is.

whether it was team griffin or his injury that changed the offensive approach in 2013, the world will never know. ce la vie imo.

We have no idea what kind of offense Gruden will be running in the regular season. It's possible we will use the read option, but in the preseason the offense is totally vanilla. I'm hoping there will be more roll outs.

Regardless of what the games meant at the time, the one glaring fact about Cousins game that has been true throughout his college and professional career is that he turns the ball over far too much. His interception rate was 2.65% for his college career and has swelled to almost 5% in his NFL career. It's pretty rare for a quarterback that has a history of turnovers to suddenly 'fix' the problem.

Here's a few more statistics from Cousins' 2013 season. I know some people don't acknowledge certain statistics, so take your pick.

Standard QB rating of 58.4 - 69th in the league.
Total QBR of 26.5 - 35th in the league.
DVOA of -42.6 - 45th out of the top 45 quarterbacks.

Completion % of 52.9 - 45th out of the top 45 quarterbacks.

I suppose none of these stats can stand up to the eyeball test, but what about any of this screams "effective NFL quarterback"?
No, they BOTH can get better. That's the point. And I have no problem with rust or growing pains, but Griffin's mistakes are mind-boggling and inexcusable even for a High School level QB - jumping in the air on passes, running out of bounds behind the line of scrimmage, inability to slide, missing wide open receivers right in front of his face.

I don't see how any of those issues have to do with learning a new system. But maybe it was just a really bad day for him and everything will be all better by September 7th. Let's all hope.

You don't remember all there reports about Griffin, with his dad, telling Shanahan he won't run those plays anymore?

When Griffin isn't a threat to run, people load up to run and dare to pass. We get into 3 and 7 and he doesn't have the ability to bail us out of that.

That's what this is all about. He's working on it. I don't know if he'll get there, but we will see.

With our sorry o-line, people are not going to need to load up on us.

A bit. I'm just a bit pissed that the team did a poor job with the offensive line in the offseason. While people have focused a lot on RG3 during the preseason, I think the horrible play by Polumbus and Chester as a possible reason that this team will do badly this season.

I just can't believe that the team couldn't find better players than these two or that they saw the tape from last year and thought that they'd be okay with them. But no one is talking or will talk about this. I think this team is cursed with always having a bad offensive line.
