Re: Time to bench Brunell?

Yeah, I have to admit, Brunell is on his way out. Just doesn't have it anymore. Regardless of whether he had Portis or not, there is no excuse this time. The Cowboys don't have a good running game either and Bledsoe did just fine. Brunell had plenty of opportunities last night and just couldn't capitalize on them because both his accuracy and arm strength are diminished. And Joe Gibbs is so damned stubborn about it, he's not going to make any immediate changes and so I'm afraid that we are going to continue with this losing streak. I'll be at the next game vs the Texans, we'll see what happens then.

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

I hate to say it, but Brunell is done and needs to go. The guy couldn't make a play if his life depended on it. Maybe I can try out as QB for the Redskins, "Hey Joe, look I too can throw a ball 10 yards to the sideline and out of bounds."

Umm for people blaming the 0-line,

Even when Brunell was protected, he was throwing some AWFUL balls. Moreover, he made poor decisions (e.g. throwing to Cooley and getting picked). He was downright awful.

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

If we start Campbell for Houston it isn't exactly feeding him to the wolves. If we start him vs NY, Indy, Eagles, etc it is. All of those teams have really good D lines. Lets test vs Houston.

Also, I can't count how many times Brunell tried to run by the rushing defensive player and ran... right into him.

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

yeah brunell manages the games alright...

he manages to lose the game. seriously, all this jazz i've heard on different forums... the man simply cannot make the throws...

period.

this goes back to last year in the playoffs when the passing game was piss poor, but at least our D was playing at a high level. it's my opinion based on what i've seen that when the blitz comes, brunell does not have the confidence to make the throws anymore even though it looks like the entire offense blows.

how come eli manning can just lob it up in 1v1 coverage off his back foot for a win? yeah i know it's 1 on 1 but i mean how could we not have that when the D is bringing house. how come eli can make a crucial throw as he's getting sacked puttin no leg into it? brunell is old news people.

luckily it's still early, though we won't be able to say that soon. to me, houston is a must-win. who would have thought?

friends, your washington redskins are the worst team in the nfc east.

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

I think madden said it last night, but I'm not sure if he was speculating or if saunders/gibbs said it: madden said that JC would not go from 3rd string to 2nd and then to 1st...he'd go from 3rd string to 1st.

if that is true, then there isn't really any reason to think collins would go in if/when MB is benched...but I have to ask: why have the 2nd and 3rd string identified if the 3rd stringer is ahead of the 2nd stringer? or, why not make JC 2nd string?

agreed. even if he's our best shot, which is questionable now, at what point should a crappy shot traded for the future?

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

Give him a few more weeks.

Between the bad playcalling, no effective rushing game, no offensive line, and a defense that isn't getting the ball to the offense, it's been pretty tough all around. (But I would say that he turned INTO the sack a few times.)

I felt that Dallas was able to tee off on him a lot so I checked the play-by-play to see what happened. I excluded the last 2 drives where they got a lot of free yards.

On 1st and 10
8 pass plays 5/7 for 47 yards, 1 sack. Ended up getting a first down on 6 of 8 series.
8 rushes. first downs on 2 of 8 series.

So it's clear it's better to pass on 1st down.
In the second half, we had 5 first downs prior to the last 2 drives. Our breakdown on first down was
4 rushes, 1 pass. What's with that?

As far as for when Dallas could tee off, I analyzed 2nd and 8+ and 3rd and 6+ (combined). Brunell's stats were
2/10 with 1 pick and 2 sacks.
Pretty bad. How much was Brunell? I can't say.
But I think an indicator is the screen passes. EVERY time they've run a screen pass some defender has been in the receiver's face. So I think Brunell gets some more time. I can't lay it all on him. Maybe he's also frustrated by the play calling, and that can really wear the QB down. From what I understand, he has less leeway to change things at the line of scrimmage than last year.

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

No, those were absolutely their fault.

What I'm talking about is the poor line play overall. I think it's largely due to our predictable play calling and Brunell's inability to get the ball downfield.

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

I quickly voted "Yes" on this one. I was a supporter of Brunell's without wavering until the 3rd quarter last night. He has absolutely no clue what Saunders is trying to do. Looking at his face as he walks off the field its' like he's saying, "Man, I knew that play wasn't going to work". I don't think he knows what he's doing. He is a scrambling, bootleg QB that reacts to the Defense in order to make a play. The total opposite of Saunders (and Gibbs) timing-based offense.

Campbell could easily have thrown for 45 yards this game, anyone, and I mean anyone, could have.

Absolutely terrible performance for a 36 year old QB. I would not even have expected Heath Shuler or Cary Conklin to play this bad.

Right now, I have zero confidence in Brunell. I had this feeling two years ago and he pulled through but I'm done with that.

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

I have to agree with that too. I watched the Falcons game and watch them totally own the Buccaneers all day. This is the same, awesome Tampa Bay defense that we watch every year and they were totally outmanned. When are we going to dominate games like that?

as soon as we get a superstar QB like Mike Vick, he's totally ran circles on the two top defenses in the league.....if they cant control old ass brad johnson and blowover Bledsoe, Vick is going to have GW with a big ass headache

Re: Time to bench Brunell?

Nobody looks comfortable in this offense. No one. If you don't accept the fact that it may take Mark a few games to grow within the offense, you might as well just throw away the season right now.

He's been missing his star RB these last two games. Yes, his play has been less than desirible, but no he isn't the big problem here.

We have had no consistent running game to speak of. I would like to see him improve the third down offense, but right now the blame falls on 11 guys, not one.
