Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

I wouldn't rule out the possibility that Marshall was released in part to help clear cap room for a contract extension to Chris Cooley.

It seems like we'd hear something about a Cooley contract extension if talks were getting close. So there's no reason to believe an extension is imminent.

Nonetheless, Marshall's release does clear $1 million in cap space, and assuming Godfrey is making the vet minimum, this move would represent a net increase in our cap space.

I don't want to read much into it at this point, other than to say it's unlike the Skins to leave cap room on the table.

ESPN is now reporting the story. Clearly Lamar lost his staying power when he was demoted in favour of London Fletcher. I wouldn't be surprised if he was disgruntled and asked to be released. I mean, I would. I don't think personal pride would allow you to be demoted.

In last weeks game Marshall didn't play with any enthusiasm. He was winging it.

I thought the same thing, but JLC's blog "reports" that Marshall was shocked by his release.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

C'mon you guys, Marshall wasn't bitching about riding the pine or being a back-up. He's been a team guy from day one, and I highly doubt he was released because he was bitching and moaning. Could be wrong, but it's just not consistent with how they've portrayed him in the past.

We all know in GWs system people are in different packages all the time, and with Marcus now playing DE in certain situations Marshall would have almost been guaranteed significant playing time. GWs defense didn't get more complex. In fact, he's scaled it back some and simplified some things, so it had nothing if anything to do with the system.

It had to be one or two things: Either that damn shoulder injury is still bothering him to the point it's affecting his performance or they are just going in another direction with the young guys.

This is pretty shocking. I will wait to pass judgement until I hear Gibbs talk to the media after practice.

I think Godfrey is this year's version of James Posey. Plain and simple.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

I'm not saying that Marshall deserved to start or was some stud, but I do remember a lot of big plays.

#1. In Week 16 of the 2005 season, Drew Bledsoe threw a pass over the middle to Witten and Marshall tipped the ball into Marcus Washington's hands, who then ran about 40 yards downfield.

#2. In Week 17 of the 2005 season, Eli Manning threw a pass to Shockey and Marshall picked the pass and ran do the Giants' 20 yard line.

#3. In Week 7(?) of the 2005 season, Marshall picked off a pass by Kerry Collins and scampered into the endzone for a TD.

I'm sure there are more, but he was a playmaker in 2005.

Yes, those were all good plays, but do we keep players endlessly based on how they performed 2 seasons ago?

Exactly.

I think the coaches might have had some flashbacks to Holdman getting run over all last year and they didn't want to see the same thing happening to Marshall if he had to play for MW. At 230 pounds I wouldn't have wanted to see him playing the strongside for any significant amount of time.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

All I know is that this move is pretty inconsistent with the team's (and coach's) public stance that Lemar Marshall provides invaluable depth along the LB corps, because he's versatile and has played a number of positions.

Now all of a sudden the team has changed its mind and has deemed the depth he provided as expendable.

There had to be a catalyst for this move. Maybe it's grumbling on Marshall's part, injury, a sudden character problem, or salary cap motivation to clear room to extend Cooley. But it had to be something; the team didn't just all of a sudden change its mind on him. I find it hard to believe he was simply outplayed by Blades & Sartz; after all, Marshall was jettisoned for ANOTHER LB.

Hopefully JLC can shine some light for us.

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??

Ironic that he sucked in pass coverage but lead our team in picks in 2005. Now that is irony.

He's always gotten most of my INTs on Madden too.
