Ah! That being said, I'm cautiously optimistic.

Don't quote me on those conditions though. Still trying to verify and Mort's too busy to talk to me today...sigh

Re: Offer made on Chad (1st rd '08, conditional 3rd rd '09)
For the record Dallas did not inquire about Chad Johnson. Jerry Jones held his annual pre-draft media "bash" today where he was asked about the validity of the report.
He was pretty succinct too. "No" is how he flatly answered the question. But Jerry did say that he has asked another team about the availability of a star receiver. And the smart money says that was either A) Detroit (Roy Williams) or B) Arizona (Anquan Boldin). "I wouldn't give who it was, but the answer is yes. We have talked (with another team)," Jones said. "I wouldn't give you a timeframe on it either, if you're talking the last week or the last few days. But certainly since (the start of) the offseason." But one thing is certain, it was NOT Chad Johnson. |

If these reports are true then Vinny and the gang are still a bunch of tools. Haven't we learned our lesson with tempermental wr's. We've got an aging o-line, an aging #1 corner and a starting DE that's about to collect social sercurity. Do they even know the formula to success in the NFL? Vinny and Dan all you have to do is look north on route 95! It's not WR play. Sorry but it's not. You need some pass rushers, you need an offensive line and you need not spectacular, but solid mistake free qb play.

I think we're going a little overboard here if trading away one pick means the draft is blown. |

Re: Offer made on Chad (1st rd '08, conditional 3rd rd '09)
If we were one player away or we were a team knocking on the door to the SB then I could see. Kind of like how Philly traded for TO. But we barely made the playoffs and we were one and done. We need a solid two years of good drafting before we're that type of team. The whole O-line is going to have to be replaced in 2 years. Most people might not want to admit it but we're a team in transition right now. Why potentially set yourself back for the future by trading for this guy. It's just not smart football.

I think that people just aren't thinking here. They just have it ingrained in their minds that because of failed maneuvers like Lloyd and Duckett. Yet we tend to forget failed draft maneuevers like Taylor Jacobs.

We and projected to field one of the oldest starting lineups in the league. We are likely to lose key starters at several positions within the next 2 years. Aside from QB and RB, I think we have depth issues at every position. It is becoming increasingly difficult to fill holes and build depth via free agency. So, in my opinion, we need to acquire more depth and youth via: (1) the draft; and/or (2) trades. Trading for Chad isn't making a trade for a younger, proven player and it costs us the opportunity to draft young, cheap talent. So, IMO, while the world wouldn't end if we did make the trade, there are certainly legitimate reasons to think it might cause problems for us down the line. |

The best Cincy can do is pull what we did to Arrington...bench him. The best CJ could do is show up and maybe be only 50% on the field. Drop a few ball or better yet tip a few balls and have them accidently fall into the opponants hands. He would quickly be benched (getting paid the whole time) or traded. I would certainly welcome sitting on the bench and getting paid to not break a leg. Cincy thinks it's just a tempertantrum....I wonder what will be next. |

I'm in between. I think this proposed trade would hurt and help at the same time. It's not going to ruin the franchise by any means, but it will certainly be odd given the way we lowballed DJ Hackett, didn't even give Bryan Johnson a sniff, and have been preaching restraint and building through the draft. As great as CJ is, it's still trading multiple picks for a very expensive 30 year old with a huge mouth and a penchant for whining when his team underperforms. I'm still baffled the way we let Hackett get away. He's 4 years younger than Chad, waaaaay cheaper, big, very fast, and played for a few years with Zorn. Granted he's not the player CJ is, but he would have helped a lot at a smallish price and we wouldn't have had to give up a single draft pick.

I understand trading for CJ would improve the team on paper. But again, I worry about bringing a mouth like his into an already united locker room with a rookie head coach. Not to mention we're giving up a significant amount in both this and next year's draft to do so. I know he's awesome, but it just worries me. You bring up a good point about Hackett. Surely Zorn has inside info on him and maybe he's not worth the cash. I just think there are other routes we can take to bring in a big WR without trading high draft picks and signing a 30 year old guy with some baggage. Don't get me wrong, I think Ocho is a hell of a player, I'm just torn about acquiring him for multiple reasons.

Re: Offer made on Chad (1st rd '08, conditional 3rd rd '09)
Actually I think the deal that was offered was very fair for both sides. CJ is a guy who routinely puts up 90+ catches and 1300-1400 yards. You're not going to get a guy like that for a 4th round pick, this isn't Maddens we're talking about.
