Anything that Joe Gibbs does in connection with this organization, good intentions or not, will be problematic for whomever is running the team. You don't get Joe Gibbs in a vacum. People want him involved, but then don't want him involved. They want the Skins to be successful, but they want to somehow put Gibbs' name on it. Shit get's complicated when he's around. For the sake of the long-term prospects of the team, I would rather he stay away. Hey, let him come back once we get things right. But I just don't think he's the one to get us moving in the right direction. |

Now, lets change this story around. Gibbs takes the President of operations job and he calls Chris Polian and lets him know DS is interested in him taking over the team and fixing this mess and that only he(Gibbs) the new GM and new HC would be making all football decisions with out DS.....I have to imagine it would be a more interesting job then simply knowing he was going to the Skins with status quo. Matter of fact I imagine more prospects would be made available when hearing that DS is trying a hands off approach, but willing to spend the money. |

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
What Danny needs to do is grow some balls and select a GM on his own. I personally would go for one of those young up and coming director of personnel guys like DeCosta or Gaines.

Bobby Beathard on ESPN 980 says Gibbs would thrive in the role described in the Florio article. Has been to and is quite familiar with Gibbs racing. "Amazing what Joe has done there".

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
The reason Gibbs would come back in my opinion would be because he feels like what he had done is now in shambles. Which unfourtunatley it is. I would love to see Gibbs in action again but the truth of the matter is that this franchise needs someone that will be around for the long haul. 10-15 years. Look at Pittsburgh, we should mirror them to a tee. Tomlin is going to have them around for years. Why not look to someone like Dungy?

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Okay, if that's the case then why do we need Joe Gibbs to oversee the player operation if he's not going to be hands on? Why bring him here at all? I would think there are other football minds who are more familiar with the current landscape of assistant coaches and GMs that are ready and capable to take the next step.
Joe Gibbs just seems removed and detached, until Danny calls him, from the day-to-day goings on of the NFL. I'm certain there's a flow of information and exchange that you're only privy to because you're plugged in. That's something you can't just jump in and out of and get real feel for. I guess to make my point more clear, SmootSmack works for ESPN. I'll bet when goes on vacation and returns to work, all kinds of shit has gone on behind the scenes around the league that he's not up to speed on. And we're just talking about a week. As far as Parcells not being GM, wasn't it his choice to cut ties with Jason Taylor and then bring him back into the fold? That sounds like GM to me.
1) You are probably correct in saying there may be "other football minds with more current knowledge", but news flash....if you have not been reading or hearing the news almost no one wants to come to work for DS. At the end of the season DS is not going to fire everyone and do job interviews. I would bet no one shows up ...qualified that is. Atleast with Gibbs being associated with the search and hopefully DS's hands off approach will open doors for us. Also, everyone wanted DS to go the no name young talented HCing route. We did that ....look where we are. I'd rather have a bonified GM, which we won't get unless DS promises to stay out of the picture and maybe it's a start to prove he means business by having someone else hire his GM for him. 2) Lets try this scenario.....Zorn was currently working in this league when brought in as HC, and by all accounts he looks like he doesn't have a clue as to what he's doing. How about the Browns HC? supposed to be the next up and comer but failed with the Jets and now with the Browns. Also it didn't take Gibbs long to figure out the CAP issues that weren't around during his first term. 3) Yes it was Parcells idea to part ways with Taylor. Ya wanna know the reason? Cause he was a primidana like Portis and didn't want to come to practice until all the hard stuff was out of the way. Parcells told him show up or don't come at all. Taylor didn't show up so Parcells traded him. Not a dumb move there for a VP of operations. I'm guessing Gibbs could do as much as that. and....if I had my choice between DS, Cerrato, or Gibbs I would rather meet with Gibbs. Cerrato is a complete idiot. Talk about people not having football knowledge and Cerrato is the face of it. Every team in the league just about laughs at us because of Cerrato. DS clearly has no football knowledge. He can't even hire a decent GM let alone a decent HC. No one even knows if this is good info or made up twisted info. Yes DS met with Gibbs for dinner. Outside of that no one knows what was discussed. Did this cross my mind when I heard it...yes, more to the point of DS asking him to maybe be the GM but this scenario is better. He could hire a true GM to hire a decent (young or old) HC and "Rebuild" this team from the trenches out like most people wanted and make this team great again. If it doesn't happen or wasn't true other then DS asking Gibbs what he thought of certain HC's then so be it. |

I don't care if it's Gibbs or someone else, but with a credible and respected team prez in place, or whatever the title is, it would make working in D.C. a much more attactive proposition. The coach and GM would primarily interact with the team president taking the owner that much further out of the picture. I think it's a good move to make, like I said whether it's Gibbs or someone else. |

However right now a lot of our problems stem from the fact that we don't have a Drew Brees type at QB and the running game is inconsistent. If we had one of those then we would be able to be productive offensively but we don't. I know Portis got over 100 yards against the Cheifs but 70% of that yardage was on one play on a drive that didn't even produce points if I recall correctly.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Took me a while to get in touch with the person who gave me the lead about 9 months ago that Gibbs and the Redskins might just reunite one of these days. According to that "source":
1. This is NOT a done deal. 2. A similar offer was made to Joe Gibbs in the past and he turned it down because of "three sticking points". 3. Two of the "three sticking points" are still there. I do not know what the "sticking points" were so obviously I don't know which one of them "disappeared". The "source" says that there have been direct and specific discussions on the idea of Gibbs comng back to the Redskins - - NOT as head coach - - within the past 10 days.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
It was not my intention to absolve Gibbs of any responsibility. I was concentrating more on his desire to be here than some here may want him to return. You and 12th man both make excellent points however.

SFREDSKIN:
Danny and Vinny cannot be the two "sticking points" because if Danny were one of them, Gibbs would just not take any calls on the subject of coming back to the Skins. I said I do not know what the "sticking points" are, but it is not logical that Danny Boy is one of them.
