Re: Let's Talk Levi Jones and Offensive Line

Our running game looks halfway decent now that Portis isn't playing. So maybe Bugel is doing his job with these UDFAs on the line. Maybe Portis...no, I don't even want to talk about the guy. I just wish we had Champ Bailey back, but I can wish forever and it won't happen. Right now I'm wishing that we've seen the last of Vinny, but we might have to see both of them next year and hope that Portis doesn't go back into his sabotage mode. He tried his best to undermine Jim Zorn when I was a Zorn fan. Ended up that Zorn himself did a good job of that.

Re: Let's Talk Levi Jones and Offensive Line

Is anyone else beginning to see a reason why Mike Williams was out of the NFL for several years and why none of the other 31 teams spent the summer months beating down Levi Jones' door to come and play for them?

The title of this thread invites discussion of the offensive line and so...

Let me assume for a moment that Chris Samuels actually retires at the end of this year. I don't wish that on him, but assume that for the moment.

Look at the other offensive linemen on this roster. Which of them would qualify under the following heading :

"Starter For More Than Half The Teams In The NFL"

Maybe Dockery. Maybe not...

Maybe Thomas if he recovers fully. Maybe not...

I think that's the list. Even in an uncapped year, the rejuvenation of the OL will be a most difficult task.

Re: Let's Talk Levi Jones and Offensive Line

too bad MW can't play left tackle

maybe I wasn't watching close enough but EW looked alright to me, but then again when Rinehart looked like he was getting it they replaced him too.. only to do it again

I wonder how much Zorn consults with Bugel about who should be starting

Big Mike can't actually play the tackle position. But Guard is something he can handle.

I know they want to get a look at a bunch of different guys, but I also have no idea what the heck they are doing on the OL. Mike Williams is 29, he'll be 30 next year, and he's just not that good.

Re: Let's Talk Levi Jones and Offensive Line

I think Bruce Allen sees that elephant in the room that Vinny couldnt see...and I think Danny Boy does as well has already taken the check book out and is ready to start writing....My ideal Oline next year:

Marcus McNeil (LT), Dock (LG), Jeff Byers (Rookie) (C), Jahri Evans (LG), Trent Williams (Rookie) (RT).

Bench: Reinhart, Heyer, E. Williams, Levi Jones

New check cashers McNeil and Evans would be significant upgrades at their positions. Evans may be tough to pry away from Saints. Byers would be a nice grab in 4th round and is probably the most talented Center in the draft getting rid of hold over from the Gibbs era Rabach...I think Russell Okung probably gone by the 3rd pick so Trent Williams at his natural RT position would be a fit for us.

Anybody else gotta better Oline ideas? Post it

imo you dont take a natural right tackle in the top 5 picks. if you want williams, trade down and get him in the 10-15 range, which to me is still high for a right tackle, but not nearly as much of a reach.

I would agree with that. Yeah a trade down would be ideal. Bradford, Berry, maybe even McKoy or the wide out from Ok State could be on someone rader for a trade to our position. It would be mighty damn fine to pick up an extra 2nd round pick.

Re: Let's Talk Levi Jones and Offensive Line

i like that scenario, except why not Williams a starter at center? at least he would have one season under his belt. i was hoping he would play some center, so the skins would know if they have something

I just think if Skins are going to commit to a Center pick they do so with the understanding he is talented enough to start. They got Williams and went ahead and developed him with some Guard experience which is great cause of roster value. Hell, Beyers may show that ability as well. I mos def think Williams and Beyers would battle it out for that position, think USC rookie is just better.

Why did they play Will Montgomery, and not Edwin Williams who has shown that he is a better player

Williams was inactive. The team is deathly afraid of having Rabach injured and having to put in a center that doesn't know the line calls. They are much happier with a center who consistently makes the wrong line calls.
