Report: Shanahan to DC done deal

My biggest problem with Shanahan is that he's clearly more interested in coaching again then he is in winning ever again. I'd rather he go play his games somewhere else than my team.

He'll bring in Bob Slowik to be our DC, and Kyle Shanahan to be our OC, and well, we won't have much by way of a coaching staff. I don't think we'll have much of an edge over other playoff teams. But he would correct the major flaw in our rushing attack without majorly overhauling the blocking schemes, and we'd never have to worry about having crappy QB play, because I don't think Shanny would ever trade in Campbell for someone markedly worse than Campbell.

I think a Mike Shanahan offense would be fun to watch, but ultimately, we'd still play most of our games on the margin, and just never be a great super bowl threat under him. I really don't think Shanahan is coming back to win another super bowl. I think he just enjoys coaching a lot.

Which is fine. It's great actually. But we're only going to go as far as our talent carries us, and we don't have very many GREAT players, especially on the offensive side. We have functional talent (and youth), at times, around a pretty good quarterback, who again, isn't a guarantee to be back. A defense coached by Bob Slowik may or may not be better than a Blache coached defense (I can't imagine it would be worse), but again, Shanahan builds around the concept of comfort, rather than excellence.

In other words, I can see why Danny and Shanny are a good fit.

Let me get this straight: You believe Mike Shanahan wants to coach again, but doesn't care about winning?

To clarify: I'm not saying that Shanahan doesn't want to win. I'm saying he won't do what's necessary to win, if his initial try doesn't work.

But he already knows what's necessary to win, because he's won. Your statement sounds like this is a guy who doesn't know what he's doing, is going to try something that hasn't worked before, and won't adjust if it doesn't work. But it already has worked with Shanahan.

Good grief. Some people are really reaching to find a reason to hate the man.

You eloquently described my fears about Shanny. In his latter years in Denver it seemed clear to me that he had lost his competitive fire and I'm not sure a year off will stoke it at his age. He will bring many positives to the table, to be sure. But I think that we'll end up being like his later Broncos teams: playoff contenders in good years, mediocre in bad years, but never really contending for a Lombardi.

Hey Tripp, on a side note, what do you think about Bruce Campbell (just saw your "Campbell blocking for Campbell")? After seeing the Terps stink it up in football, I really haven't been following them.

To be honest, he declared today, and it was more about putting something in my user title that sounded swell.

With that said, if he's around when we pick in the second, he's a guy who can play both tackle positions, and while he's not my most favorite OLman in the draft, I wouldn't hesitate to take him if the value was right.

Gotcha...I also noticed this headline about Campbell...I didn't know if it was a headline on ESPN because he's that good of a player or something. The Terps o-line didn't look great this year...but apparently they have him rated as the #24 prospect.

He's a lot like William Beatty (Giants #2 pick) last year. More quick than powerful, fits the zone scheme that Maryland (and we) like(s) to play. Could provide first round value, but again, a team that would play him right away is hurting for offensive lineman.

Not that the Redskins are hurting for lineman or anything.

The other thing that contributed is that, I don't know if anyone heard, but if Heyer can't go this week, our starting RT (or, guy who will be blocking Justin Tuck) will be some guy named William Robinson.

Not to make this about me, but I'd like to think that I could tell you at least one thing, no matter how basic, about every player in the NFL. I could not tell you anything about William Robinson. This is very depressing, if he's blocking Justin Tuck.

I should point out that my film study suggest that Heyer has been our strongest run blocker this year, and really not all that much of a liability in pass protection. But he was a lot better in protection pre-Samuels injury.

He's a fundamentally sound player, generally speaking, but he's never not going to give up 5 or 6 sacks a year, no matter how many developmental resources we spend on him. There will be better options. I'm just not sure they will come as inexpensively.

Well Zorn did the best he could but it did not result in wins. I like the coaching staff we have now except Zorn is not head coaching material. If Gruden or Shanahan is not the next coach let Blache or Sherm Lewis get a shot at the HC positon. Didn't Shanahan draft Maurice Claret in the 3rd round?. That was a reach pick.
