Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
After hearing SS and SC's comments, I am more encouraged. I am betting that, as Matty said, the sticking points are not money or people oriented but committment/ lifestyle issues for Gibbs.
Given that DS and JG had such an amiable relationship previously, I wonder if "control" issues have anything to do with it at all (i.e. - "Danny, you're going to have to back off" "No way Joe, it's still my team"). I bet it all boils down to DS finding a way to get Gibbs to run the team w/out Gibbs being consumed by it again.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Gibbs would be great in a CEO role without the additional burden of coaching. That is essentially his role in Gibbs Racing, and he has put together a fantastic team there. I wonder whether Snyder is offering Gibbs part ownership to make this happen? This is the best rumor in an otherwise dark season.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
It was kind of vague really. I don't think Cerrato will be part of any scenario from a football related decision making process, Gibbs or no Gibbs.
As for Doug Williams. Yes, he was mentioned as a possible GM. I don't know that he's quite ready for that yet. But he has worked his way up the ladder with the Bucs front office and his name carries a lot of weight with NFL players, which could go a long way.

Is Doug Williams the next James Harris? We could do worse.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
If this is true it will be the greatest thing for the franchise. I don't want Coach for GM though. Half his drafts/FA signings were whack as President/Coach, so I hope he does indeed hire a new GM.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
SS, is there a time frame on this? Is it something that would wait to the end of the season? Even if it does happen, what effect if any would it have on this season?

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
SmootSmack - - et. al:
Here is what I KNOW at the moment: 1. The "sticking point" that disappeared is somehow related to Gibbs' demands relative to the time he wopuld have to spend with his family - - particularly his grandchild who is suffering from leukemia. I do NOT know any details. All I know is that Joe Gibbs is at a place in his life where he is NOT going to work 100 hours a week at any job - - as he did as coach of the Redskins - - because it conflicts with family "stuff" that is more important to him now than football is important to him. 2. From the Skins' side of the table, they want this to happen yesterday; meanwhile, Gibbs is not highly motivated to step into the middle of a season that is circling the drain because he knows that he will be viewed by the media and the fans as a "savior" and he knows that saving the 2009 season is a long, long shot at best. Here is what I SURMISE/SUSPECT: 1. There is BIG TIME money attached to this employment offer. There is so much money attached that anyone would be a fool to kick it to the curb without giving it careful consideration. 2. Danny Boy is getting close to "desperate". He sees/hears/reads about fan disaffection and it is starting to get through to him that the majority of folks think now that HE is the bad guy in all of this. The "buffer-zone" of yes-men and ass-kissers around him can no longer keep out the reality of the dislike that exists for him outside the organization. Even a couple of the "iconic true-blue Redskins" of previous years have started to distance themselves from him. I have another "source" who tells me that ONE of the Redskins' heroes of the 80s will not return Danny Boy's calls anymore. Obviously, I don't KNOW if that is true, but just think about that possibility for a moment. And think of what that means to Danny Boy in terms of his image and stature in the public eye and in the league if that "iconic true-Redskin" ever went public with bad info on Danny Boy... 3. I SUSPECT that Gibbs - - having lived through the Redskins' managment structure of the last couple of years and found it wanting - - will DEMAND in writing certain changes about how things get done and who makes the decisions about what needs to get done. My GUESS is that this is a "sticking point". Finally, Doug Williams may be a great GM-in waiting - - or he could be the African-American version of Matt Millen. I have no idea where he falls on that spectrum. But if the Skins elevate him to that post, he damned well better be VERY good...

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back
Say what you want about Gibbs. It was he who decided to draft Sean Taylor when the entire world was telling him to draft Winslow. The only questionable pick was Jason Campbell. Also, he did a great job drafting Cooley in the second round too. I'm sure these points have been raised already. But I didn't read all 11 pages, so excuse the redundancy.
