I do not know what the "sticking points" were so obviously I don't know which one of them "disappeared".

The "source" says that there have been direct and specific discussions on the idea of Gibbs comng back to the Redskins - - NOT as head coach - - within the past 10 days.
Tip of the hat to you Mudge, you absolutely called it. Getting a little update on my end

Definitely not a done deal

Cerrato won't be part of this

Would prefer to stay based in North Carolina, it appears it would be more...wait for it...consultant based with the title of President than anything else. Bring in the GM and HC and then move aside on a day to day basis.

My ongoing joke about Doug Williams apparently might not be so far off as well according to these reports

Again, to reiterate nothing is imminent. Personally, I think nothing will happen. They'll talk but at the end of the day I say Gibbs stays where he is.

Was Gregg Williams perhaps the 3rd sticking point or maybe AL Saunders? I am going to take a stab at it and say that Clinton Portis and Vinny Cerrato are the other 2.

SC and Smootsmack:

Thank you both for your inside info!:-)

Well, one thing is for sure. Something is going to happen. I kind of sort of doubt Joe Gibbs is going to come back in any capacity, but I would certainly welcome it over the way things are going now.

Interesting tidbit about Doug Williams! Has his name actually been knocked around?

When you find out what the other two sticking points are let me know. I'll take care of it.

I'm going to guess the "sticking points" aren't necessarily people.

Gibbs brought Portis in.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Let see (if we're guessing):

Sticking point 1: I get to stay in NC. Was a problem, now not as Danny desparate.

Sticking point 2: Vinny goes - Danny has an unnatural attachment to VC, still a problem.

Sticking point 3: Not a full time job - Danny wants his full attention. Stilll a problem as DS probably willing to say "work from your home, feel free to do other things but make the Redskins your primary focus" to which JG responds "no - if I make them my primary focus it will consume me. If it's my full time job, I will be unhappy not being in DC to control things and I am staying here with my family."

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

After hearing SS and SC's comments, I am more encouraged. I am betting that, as Matty said, the sticking points are not money or people oriented but committment/ lifestyle issues for Gibbs.

Given that DS and JG had such an amiable relationship previously, I wonder if "control" issues have anything to do with it at all (i.e. - "Danny, you're going to have to back off" "No way Joe, it's still my team"). I bet it all boils down to DS finding a way to get Gibbs to run the team w/out Gibbs being consumed by it again.

Re: PFT Rumor - Joe Gibbs is Coming Back

Gibbs would be great in a CEO role without the additional burden of coaching. That is essentially his role in Gibbs Racing, and he has put together a fantastic team there. I wonder whether Snyder is offering Gibbs part ownership to make this happen? This is the best rumor in an otherwise dark season.

Thanks for the info Smoot. Can you elaborate a little more regarding what your sources said about Cerrato and Doug Williams.

I ithink your comment about cerrato could be interpretted a few ways:
- Cerrato will not be part of this organization in 2010, no matter what
- Cerrato will not be part of a Gibbs-run team
- Cerrato was not one of the sticking points (meaning he will be part of the team)

Also, please, please, please tell me that Gibbs wouldn't bring in Doug Williams as a GM. What on earth would make him any more qualified than Vinny to run this team?

I know this he brought in Williams too, but you cannot argue the amount of headaches he caused.

Besides this is just a theory I'm not saying it's 100%, but it is possible. I am more inclined to agree with Matty that not all of the sticking points may be related to personnel. I just would be able to fathom the ones that are not related to people because I wasn't in his position. To this day, nobody really understands what the structure exactly was when he was here. Without knowing that it is difficult to determine what peeved him. Going with what I sort of know, Portis was in his office an awful lot for different “semi- disciplinary” reasons.

All plausible. Good thinking.
