Jack Bauer's Days are Numbered?: FCC May Regulate Violence on Television

The FCC has always regulated the use of profanity and nudity in television broadcasts and now they are thinking about regulating the depiction of violence of TV (at least during hours when children may be watching).

Ugh. Just another example of the gov't abusing its power. What's next, censoring what people say in musical lyrics? Oh wait...

A good video which is pretty relevant:
YouTube - Frank Zappa on Crossfire

How hilarious would it be if they had some promo for 24 that had Kiefer Sutherland showing up at FCC headquarters, shotguns blazing and totally blow a ridiculously fake looking hole in the head of the FCC.

God, I would love that.

I will have to say that turning on the TV with young children in the home is getting harder and harder every day. With that said I do not think this is a good idea as I can decide what should or should not be seen by my children. If they want a rating system that would be ok (I think thay may already have one) or if they wanted to encourage stations to have the violence on a latter time would be ok with me.

No kidding. I am of the same school of thought. Plus, with so many programming options you can select which programs are suitable for kids to watch. Isn't there something like V-chip technology that allows you to filter out programs that have violence, langiage, etc?

I myself am for it,I'm far from being a prude but the morals of this country are at an all time low and that shit they get away with on tv nowadays is terrible,and I'm talking abc,nbc,cbs,not cable.when i was growing up i had brady bunch and partridge family in primetime,now you get a guy getting a handjob at a massage parlor in the opening scene{new abc show,in case of emergency}

You're right about that, even the commercials can be pretty bad. My family has to change the channel constantly when shows like American Idol or Survivor cut to commercial because the spots for shows like CSI or 24 or whatever show so much of the show that it gives her nightmares.
At the same time, I love cable shows like Deadwood, Dexter, and Rome because they can be grittier because of the station that they're on. Then again, these shows don't have ads that play during programs aimed at families.
We need some kind of a happy median on TV, but some people are just too sensitive to the simplest stuff while other people don't seem to care what their kids see.

Re: Jack Bauer's Days are Numbered?: FCC May Regulate Violence on Television

You can't legislate morality. If your kids don't see it on TV you can bet your ass they are going to see and hear it in the real world (school mostly). Plus, you have parental control capabilities these days so use it to lock your kids out of mature shows. I do agree though that the commercials are getting more provocative and need to be curbed.

p.s. That was an awesome clip of cross fire. Man has the quality of Crossfire degraded over the years.

We have the channel blocker set up on all 4 tv's in the house. It works great. But as I do agree that some of the stuff on at 'family' hours is getting out of control, Im more in favor of regulating the PARENTS!
