Brunell and Redskins Reportedly Close to Restructured Deal

"In such a deal, Brunell, 36, likely would end up with a considerably lower cap figure, with a portion of his salary converted into a bonus, and a base salary closer to $1 million. Although he would make much less than $5.2 million, he would have job security for next season and some guaranteed money from the new bonus. Base salaries are not guaranteed in the NFL, and each team must fit under the $109 million salary cap."

this should save a little over 3mill this year, but that's still a ways off from having enough for dockery/fletcher/clements/te?/de? it says they're looking for.

might be able to get fletcher, dockery, an either bly or smoot though with a very cheap TE (or vet min OG/OT to convert).

I'm not big on brunell, but think he would be a more then adequate backup

Thats fine but why be hard on Brunell about his contract? Its not his fault that the FO threw the bank at him. He did what any other QB in his situation would have done he took the $$. Fine be hard on him about his diminished QB skills and what not but you shouldnt hate on him because he went for the $$...

MB is Gibbs guy and this tells me that Gibbs has not completely given up on MB as the starter.

Wouldn't a restructured deal imply that he has moved on to a backup role?

Re: Brunell and Redskins Reportedly Close to Restructured Deal

I'm pretty sure that Gibbs has come to his senses and realized that Mark can't get it done as the starter. Also, I'm really glad we'll never have to cross the bridge of "who should be our backup, now?" I wasn't too excited about the names I brought up, so I'm glad Bledsoe, Harrington, Plummer, Warner (I know he's supposed to retire), etc can go elsewhere.
