'91 Redskins vs. '07 Patriots

Just thought I'd do a quick comparison of dominant teams to see which team is more impressive through 7 games and here's the results.

Through the first 7 games of the 1991 season the Redskins had outscored their opponents 231 - 82, or by an average score of 33.0 - 11.7. Average margin of victory = 21.3.

In comparison the 2007 Patriots have outscored their opponents 279 - 120, or by an average score of 39.9 - 17.1. Average margin of victory = 22.8.

Just to give us an idea of the level of domination we're talking about. Can we just not show up this week?

Re: '91 Redskins vs. '07 Patriots

Kinda tough to compare. One can only compare these types of dominate teams compared only to the talent level they were competing against at that time.

I do think the competition in the NFC East was tougher in '91 compared to now. No salary cap and 3 of the 4 richest franchises were in that division.

But I also have never seen a team as well rounded in every aspect of the game as the 07 Patriots. I believe they are the best team to take the field since the '85 Bears.

Tough call

I wanted to also compare the overall W-L records of their opponents, but I'm too lazy.

i was going to compare brady's numbers thus far to peytons from a few back and see if hes got a legit chance at taking the touchdown record. but i was too lazy and it would most likely make me feel worse this sunday.

I'll do it for you, he's got 27 TDs in 7 games, he's on pace for almost 62 TDs.

There is no way our offense can keep up with this team. Through 6 games, Portis has scored 5 TDs, Sellers 2 and Cooley the other 4. That's IT for TD. Brady has 27 by himself!!!

If our D plays well we can hold them under 30 points, but our Offense can't get but 2 Tds a game! Patriots 28 Skins 10 record 4-3

Re: '91 Redskins vs. '07 Patriots

The 91 skins did not have the star studded D the Pats have. They've got a very unheralded d line - Seymour, Wilfork & Ty Warren are all top notch players. They get some credit, but still don't have the name recognition of Bruschi & Vrabel, or even A. Thomas.

The 91 Skins D was impressive for how well they played w/only a few studs on the unit; D. Green, W. Marshall & Mann. Other than those guys it was a cast of nfl role players who were decent but not close to stars.
I think the 91 Skins had a better O w/one exception; Brady is BY FAR better than Rypien was! understatement indeed

Re: '91 Redskins vs. '07 Patriots

Ok I went back and did some more homework and here's what I came up with.

These were the W-L records at the time when the Redskins played these opponents:

Detroit 0-0
Dallas 1-0
Phoenix 2-0
Cincinnati 0-3
Philly 3-1
Chicago 4-1
Cleveland 2-3

Total W-L record of 12-8, .600 winning %.

In comparison, these were the W-L records at the time when the Patriots played these opponents:

NY Jets 0-0
San Diego 1-0
Buffalo 0-2
Cincinnati 1-2
Cleveland 2-2
Dallas 5-0
Miami 0-6

Total W-L record of 9-12, .428 winning %.

Sweet, nice work Matty. Seems like 91 Skins were a formidable foe. Only if I remembered those days...

Re: '91 Redskins vs. '07 Patriots

That was the last GREAT year for the skins. I hope GW and the defense does some homework, and that Al opens the playbook a little. We need to score at least 28 points to have a chance in this game. I would look at the last few Patriot losses over the past 2 years to figure out the best game plan for them.

Re: '91 Redskins vs. '07 Patriots

i really think the skins have a shot. too bad the offensive line isn't healthy. i can guarantee what you will be seeing on Sunday. ball control, or at least an attempt at it. Gibbs will try to keep the patriots offense off the field. but right now, our defense is easily the best the patriots have seen this season

Dude, have some faith.. Obviously u haven't watch lot of football games, there always will be some surprise upset games..

I am not saying that Redskins will upset Patriots this sun for sure.. I am saying that there is a chance of that happening, especially with our defense.. Yes, Tom Brady always manage to pick defense apart.. But I just have good feelings about our defense..

And beside, see what Al Saunders said in the very ending of this article..

Re: '91 Redskins vs. '07 Patriots

I think the Posse is comparable to the Pats WR's but Byner was more consistent than anyone on the Pats. As for Ryp, his long ball is one of the nicest I have ever seen. If he could have ever developed a better short game he'd have had a really nice career. Wilbur Marshall is one of the most underrated coverage LB's of all-time.
Watch the America's Game on the 91 Skins. It is great.
Great line on the show from Mann about playing the Lions in the playoffs: "I couldn't believe that they were starting a Rookie against me. In the playoffs?"
Kornheiser's headline the next day after the Lions game: Three plays and this one was finis.
But still, not nearly as good as the Pats.
