Who's the third best quarterback in the NFL right now?

Well it would be easy to say Favre, and I think a strong argument could be made, but I am inclined to say Roethlisberger, and not just because of his age.

He is a guy many, myself included, wrote off after he followed his abysmal superbowl performance with an even worse 06 season. I figured him to be a product of a great line, strong running game, and world class defense - certainly not a franchise player.

However, his growth this season has been remarkable. His rating of 110.2 is second to only Brady amongst active starters. His accuracy, particularily throwing the deep ball, is tremendous. Moreover, he has shown a poise and leadership in recent weeks that has been, as Ward alluded to this week, Elway-esque. Finally, his size changes the way defenses must react to him since he his so hard to bring down (plus he's deceptively quick, and he's as good as anyone in the league at knowing when to use his feet).

Who do you guys think is the third best qb in the league right now?

Brady is far and away #1. But, I'd put Big Ben, Lord Favre and Jordan's big brother in 2-4.

Well Roethlisberger was nearly dead prior to last season so I'll cut him some slack for 2006. He has been remarkable this year, no question. He's probably #3 right now

Either him or Vince Young

Aren't you forgetting a certain defending champ?

Roethlisberger and Romo are close.

Give JC better wide receivers like T.O. and coaches who trust him and he'll probably look better than he looks now.

Roethlisberger has lifted his game this season. The Steelers new approach under Tomlin is more a stretch the field first to set up the run than in prior years. Big Ben has orchestrated it to perfection.

I'm still taking Carson Palmer.

His team is struggling this year, but Palmer is the only guy I can think of outside of Brady and Manning who has played at an elite level each of the past three years.

I know that I am in the minority with this, but I think Eli's brother is the most overrated player in the history of the NFL. Put any number of NFL QB's on that team with Tom Moore coaching and they have 2 or 3 SB trophies. Look at his numbers with and without Marvin Harrison. Big Ben has Heath Miller (not as good as Dallas Clark) and Hines Ward (no where near Harrison). Palmer is surrounded by guys who aren't as interested in football as they are in their Probation Officers (Bengals most immature team in NFL?). Favre has Jennings (not has good as Stokely or Gonzalez let alone Harrison and Wayne) and Driver and a running game that doesn't concern anyone.
Despite the fact that he should never have said it when still a teammate, Vandajerk was right in criticizing his QB a few years ago. I've never seen him put lesser talent on his overrated shoulders and carry them but I have seen his choking bring down a team with far greater talent than their talent.
And I'm not even going into his off field sexual misconduct problems (though with his penchant for groping asses you couldn't pay me enough to be Jeff Saturday. Kidding I know that it is just women he harrasses.)
Put him on the Giants and I think everyone would see who the better Manning is. Had the Colts gone Leaf instead the Chargers wouldn't have won any more SB's, we just wouldn't be overwhelmed with Peyton Manning commercials. But hey, then we wouldn't have had that funny SNL so....

It causes me physical pain to admit, but Romo might end up being one of the all time great ones. The touchdown flip while getting drilled against the Giants was sick! And he makes plays like that every game. Hate him, but he is a playmaker.

Well, who are some other quarterbacks you think are overrated because their weapons are too good? What do they have in common with Manning?

Also, how can you ignore the weapons Brady has now?

I think you gotta look at their body of work. Brady has had some serious scrubs and still put up great numbers and won (Caldwell, Patten, etc). McNabb has only ever had one dominating WR and is consistently a top tier QB (sorry Thrash is underrated and one of my favorite players but he's not a top level threat). I think any good qb needs players around him and few guys can succeed with no help. But I can't think of any other qb in history that has been given so much credit for his teammates exceptional talent (a close one might be Gannon in Oakland a few years ago, but even then.)
I'm not saying that he's not been a top fifteen qb every year, just that he's not the best, 2nd best or even top 5 right now.
And this doesn't even take into account that OLine. Put him on the Falcons or Dolphins. Would his QB rating be over 75?

So I guess that fact the Colts made it to the playoffs with a bottom tier defense last season had nothing to do with Peyton Manning... or the fact that the Colts have only lost nine games in the last three seasons, with an average or worse defense?

If the only required pieces for a Superbowl victory are great receivers, why haven't the Cardinals, Lions, or Cowboys won a Superbowl recently? Yeah, Peyton sucks...
