Tony McGee Statement on Sean Taylor

Hello Everyone,

Obviously this is a real tough week for us all. The Washington Redskins not only lost their best player, but they also lost a good man. This is going to be a real tough thing for the Redskins to get over. A lot of the Redskins will rally around this, and a lot of the Redskins this will probably be crushed. There is no fault in that, it's human. This is a terrible terrible situation. The closest thing I ever had to something like this during my playing career was being on the sidelines when Daryl Stingley was paralyzed. The same thing happened to that team where many of the players attempted to rally around Daryl and many of them it effected for the rest of the season. It's very difficult.

In addition, I hope the media outlets will stop trying to find the negatives in Sean Taylor, and start looking at the changes. It's very aggravating for me. I think a lot of the media members are doing this because Sean didn't want to give them interviews, and it's ashame that as human beings we can't be better than that.

We'll never know why this had to happen. Like Coach said "only god knows". There was a change in that man a great, great change in him the last few years. I got to know Sean a little bit, as I would go talk to him in the locker room. I never went up as a reporter, but I'll go up and talk to a lot of the guys on a man to man basis. I actually made it a point to go up and talk to him after the Eagles loss when he got hurt, I told him "You know it was over when you went out"..and he just responded "I just wish I could be out there with my teammates right now."...no cameras, no recorders, just a man to man conversation because that is how he really felt. That was the last time I ever saw him.

It will be really tough.

-Tony

Re: Tony McGee Statement on Sean Taylor

Even more than being the Skins best player, Taylor was the heart of the team. His presense put fear in opposing receivers and above all, gave the entire defense a swagger every time he took the field. I don't know how the team can ever replace that.

I totally agree with Tony about the press. Even Wilbon said he wasn't surprised by the crime because of Taylor's past. When a man can't rest safely in his own bedroom, we shouldn't search for fault in the man. Taylor's past had NOTHING to do with this senseless act. It's time that the jackals in the media who called out Sean's past, even as he lay dying, start treating him like the innocent victim that he was. Sean played football heroically, but more importantly, he died heroically defending his family.
