Latest on Campbell's injury

Source: Redskins Insider

Spoke to some sources close to him who say that barring something crazy showing up on the MRI - and the Redskins and their doctors do not expect anything severe in this case - that this looks like a 4 week injury.

They are reading the MRI now, but the early sentiment expressed to Campbell was that it was "nothing major," and a standard dislocated knee cap. Coach Gibbs might not have the full word when he speaks to us at 3 pm, so we may have to wait until later in the afternoon to speak to Bubba and get the final word on the injury and Campbell's projected recovery.

I think your source told ESPN the same thing.

Let's hope that's the case. I don't want to lose a year with rehab if it's serious, especially if it might be JG final year.

Re: Latest on Campbell's injury

It's nice to know it's not a destroyed knee, the kind that you have to spend 9 months rehabbing, and then you don't even play 100% the first year back.

He should be able to get plenty of offseason work and continue his progression, rather than spend his time just trying to get healthy again.

Sounds like he'll be full go for all offseason activities.

Big relief considering how bad it looked at the time.

He should be fine and ready to go for all the offseason work.

4 weeks however is the rest of the regular season...and now that he's dislocated it once, Campbell will be more susceptible to dislocating it going forward. Hoping for the best...

I guess we shall see what Todd Collins is made of...

I really do think he'll be just fine. I wouldn't anticipate any re-occuring problems out of the norm.

Yeah I knew shoulders can pop out easily after the first dislocation, but is it the same with knees? I'm no doc, but it seems knee dislocations are darn rare.

I don't really know what I'm talkin about on this one though, to be fully honest!

Re: Latest on Campbell's injury

Patellar Subluxation - Kneecap Dislocation

Why do kneecap dislocations become a recurrent problem?
When the kneecap comes out of joint the first time, ligaments that were holding the kneecap in position are torn. The most commonly torn structure is called the medial patellofemoral ligament, or MPFL. This ligament secures the patella to the inside (medial) of the knee. When a kneecap dislocation occurs, something must fail to allow the kneecap out of the groove, and usually it is the MPFL.

Once the MPFL is torn, it often does not heal with proper tension, and the kneecap can subsequently dislocate more easily.
That is why recurrent dislocation of the kneecap occurs in a high percentage of patients who have this injury.

Yeah, it doesn't just pop out walking down the street, but being hit in the pocket could certainly create a situation where it could happen again. The good news is that when mine has re-popped, it hurts really, really bad but the pain and the immobility doesn't last as long as the first time. So, it's conceivable, that if he re-dislocated it during a game he could come out briefly then go back in. Or they could fix it, I think. I always assumed they could repair my knee surgically, but I never had it done.

Re: Latest on Campbell's injury

Update from JLC:

UPDATE: Gibbs says Campbell will not need surgery and will not start at the Giants, but said there is no timetable beyond that. He said the doctors are still reviewing everything. Again, I hear that Jason was told to expect a 4 week recovery time, preliminarily. We'll see how quickly his knee responds. Also, Gibbs said the slew of guys banged up Thursday night - Springs, Smoot, Samuels (foot), Cooley, Daniels, Portis all look better and are not expected to miss any games with their various ailments

Jason's injury continues what has been a nasty trend, this is likely now the 4th member of that 2005 Auburn offensive, first-round draft class to suffer a season ending knee injury. Campbell follows teammate Carlos Rogers, Miami'a Ronnie Brown and Tampa's Cadillac Williams. Strange.

That is crazy about the Auburn knee injuries. I'm glad he doesn't have to go under the knife tho, but he needs this playing time big time. I felt for the rest of this year he would work out this kinks in his game and get better for 2009 season. He will be a strong force next year and limit his mistakes and become one of the best QB in the league.

Campbell is a tough dude. He could have blown out his knee twice already this year.
