2008 three year-evaluation

Its the 3rd year after the 2008 draft, its the time to evaluate and see how this class stacks up.
I was looking at the first round, and I gotta say, I am astounded as to how good it is. It has alot of future multi-pro-bowlers, and much more importantly in my mind, it has VERY few busts relative to most other years.

Vernon Gholston, Derrick Harvey, and Lawrence Jackson are the only true "busts"
Leodis McKelvin and Kentwan Balmer are the only other drafts that we can so far call "disappointments" in that they are either not starting regularly or not producing well when they do start. John Stewart is having terrible year, but we should not call him a disappointment yet due to his terrible team and his great first 2 years.

EVERYBODY else starts every single game.
Some big names so far from this class include Jake Long, Matt Ryan, Darren McFadden (as of this year), Sedrick Ellis, Jerod Mayo, Ryan Clady, Joe Flacco, Aquib Talib, Chris Johnson, and Rashard Mendenhall.

Looking through the other rounds, the number of players to make an impact seem scarce. Of course there are a few such as brandon flowers, jamaal charles, curtis lofton, desean jackson, etc... But it seems like this is the best draft I've ever seen in terms of getting it right and picking up the best players in the first round. Especially after the second round, talent gets increasingly scarce to a point where it becomes almost a joke to look for starters.

Unfortunately for us, we got Devin Thomas, Kelly, and Fred Davis right? FD has got talent but he can't be considered a great pick at this point. Right about now, I wonder what we would look like w/ two of those picks being offensive lineman?

I loved the trade at the time w/Atl. to move back & draft in the 2nd round, but in hindsight Atl. got a good OT in Sam Baker w/our pick. Might not be a star, but will be a starter for a while.

I want to know why Xavier Adibi is not starting.

Re: 2008 three year-evaluation

Just looking at who we could have taken in the first before trading down..

Sam Baker-OT-Atlanta Falcons
Duane Brown-OT-Texans

I didn't go further than that but either of the two i believe have had decent starts to their careers. There are others like Chris Johnson..that hurts.

That sums up our man Vinny though. At least he gave us Orakpo.

To be honest all I care about is our players and we know how they're doing. But no question some of those players you mention are studs.

Re: 2008 three year-evaluation

guys we missed, pre-trade (in order of how much we would want them)....Chris Johnson, Sam Baker, Duane Brown, Kenny Phillips, Dustin keller, Rashard Mendenhall, Antoine Cason, Felix Jones, Mike Jenkins, Donnie Avery.
guys we missed with our second round pick post trade...Brandon Flowers, Curtis Lofton, Chilo Rachal, Tracy Porter, Tyrell Johnson, Eddie Royal.
Guys we missed twice in the second round post trade...Desean Jackson, Calais Campbell (they were the only two selected between kelly and davis).
Guys in the second that we missed with all 3 picks...Ray Rice, Jason Jones, Mike Pollak,Terell Thomas, (Chad Henne?).

Thats a long list for us to have drafted two guys that are no longer going to be on our team and a backup TE who can't catch a cold.

Just by randomly selecting 3 players from anywhere in the 2nd round, odds are we would have done a significantly better job of drafting.

That's pretty funny but true. Throwing a dart at 2nd round options would have had a better success rate than we had.

The Bills gave us Orakpo.

The SF fans and coaches might think so. But he's now a starter for Seattle. Another man's trash is another man's treasure.

Re: 2008 three year-evaluation

2 34 Devin Thomas WR Michigan State
2 48 Fred Davis TE USC
2 51 Malcolm Kelly WR Oklahoma
3 96 Chad Rinehart T Northern Iowa
4 124 Justin Tryon CB Arizona State
6 168 Durant Brooks P Georgia Tech
6 180 Kareem Moore DB Nicholls State
6 186 Colt Brennan QB Hawaii
7 242 Rob Jackson DE Kansas State
7 249 Chris Horton SS UCLA

Thomas: Bust
Davis: Good but still a backup
Kelly: Still has a slight chance to be good if he can stay healthy, but probably a bust
Rhinehart: Bust
Tryon: He's ok, but he's playing for the Colts and we only got a late round pick for him. Does anyone know what pick that was yet?
Brooks: Worst punter ever to live, and the only punter taken in this draft, which is pretty bad
Moore: Our only starter from this draft, good in coverage, can't tackle
Brennan: Crap
Jackson: 3rd year on the practice squad
Horton: Had one good game as a rookie, been pretty bad since, but at least he's still on the team I guess. Can't expect much from a late 7th rounder.

So basically Vinny sucks ass, which we already knew. 1 starter out of 10 picks is pretty pathetic. As someone said earlier, putting names in a hat probably would have worked better.

Re: 2008 three year-evaluation

Technically it's been 2 1/2 seasons since the draft. Usually they do the 3 year draft judging rule after their third season is over. I think Felix Jones is a good player as well, he's just not being used properly in Dallas right now.

10 picks, and only one starter. Epic Fail, and arguably our worst draft ever.

I'm pretty sure we aren't the only team to have a horrible draft, just ask the Raiders and Lions.
