Kiper on Mike Williams & Braylon Edwards

Mel Kiper: That would be a good fit .. esp. if he runs a good 40 time. Speed is very important to the Redskins in this draft. If he runs a good 40, he very well could be a Redskin. He will go top 10 overall.

Paul, Ohio: Will Mike Williams get drafted before Braylon Edwards?

Mel Kiper: I'd say probably no. Braylon will go first. Braylon had a good year but did drop some balls. But when you look at him overall, he did a heck of a job. There are lingering concerns about how fast Williams is right now. The workout for him in terms of speed will be huge. I think he goes 10-20 and Braylon goes in the top 10. The under the radar super blue chipper of the Jr. WRs has already declared .. Troy Williamson from South Carolina. He was a track star in H.S., incredible speed, he averaged 28 yards as a freshman, 99 yard TD as a sophomore, 19.4 yards per catch this year in that offense ... he can flat out fly. He was productive in a non passign offense. He could end up in the top 15 of the draft and nobody is talking about him.

too much bad history of premium receiver picks flaming out (howard, westbrook,gardner..

receivers almost always have a bigger impact their second and third years as they learn the pro game. the skins need impact next year.

there is a far greater need for help on the interior of the o line and for a dominant edge pass rusher. trading down to secure more picks makes so much more sense.
then select someone like brown or baas.

there will be little difference between edwards and some of the guys that will fall into the second round. a guy like craph thorpe could end up being another anquan boldin

there will be free agent wideouts that could help the skins. perhaps a guy like houshmanzadeh or even someone like porter

Well, Kiper basically destroys my theory that Mike Williams will be gone by the fifth pick.

Don't rule out a wide receiver with the ninth pick. If Gardner and McCants are gone -- Coles, Thrash, and Jacobs is a really thin WR lineup.

Not only that, we need more help at center and guard. I don't think either of those positions has ever been drafted inside the top ten of the draft.

I could see a D-lineman taken by the Skins though.

kiper has a lot of knowledge about players, but he is wrong an awful lot.

edwards IS rod gardner

Pros:
Great size strenth and the ability to go up and get the ball. Great vertical. Shows good play making ability and a great leader. Also has the break away speed to get past the secondary.
Cons:
Sometimes drops easy passes. He will catch the tough passes and drops the easy catches. Sometimes he also makes an easy catch look tough by jumping when he could stay on the ground and gain extra yards.


Overall:
Great athlete, good size at 6'3" Great vertical jump. Braylon should be a top 20 pick.

There are too many ways to get players to lock yourself in to picking for any particular position with a given draft pick.

To me the smartest thing to do is to get the best available player, according to what your standards are for that. That way you are adding the most talent and ability to your team as possible.

If you have 10 hall of fame caliber players in the first round, but none of them play the position you most want to draft for, to me you're not real smart if you draft a player at that position and not get one of the top flight players. You want the most overall value for your choice.

We definitely need to get a wide receiver or two - but we can draft them if necessary with our other picks or sign free agents, rather than stretch to take a player just because he's a wide receiver.

I like Edwards, and I agree that Williams speed is questionable. I want to see both of their combine workouts. By then hopefully some FA stuff will have transpired so the field is a bit clearer.

I think we can get more of an impact player with a DL than a WR. I'd love James out of Wisconsin I believe

I think with our aforementioned lack of success at picking WR in the 1st round, we will pass on taking either of them. I would love to see us go get Jerry Porter in free agency. He's had a few injuries, but if I'm not mistaken isn't he from the DC area? He could be our first day of free agency splash. You know we have to have one!

Porter no way. We need a quiet workmanlike free agency this year. No splashes! Edwards hands do scare me enough to not want him at 9. The last thing the skins need is more suspect hands on the WR corp. I do think the skins need a burner at WR, but I would rather trade down and still be able to draft a WR high and someone else to fill another need.

Why not just go after Plaxico and use the draft pick on OL or DE?

As no expert, I'll defer to better knowledge, but out of Clark, Monk and Sanders, only Monk was a first round pick. The other 2 came from small colleges, and Clark even had to go to the USFL to get playing time (OK not a great argument considering some of the other ex-USFL players! ).

This makes me think, consider what we have given up for Coles and Jacobs? Should we really be looking at drafting so high for a speedy WR with good hands? Should we be looking at the FA market for a marquee WR? I say no to both and look in the lower rounds, or trade down, for a WR and use the picks that matter for a blue chip DE or C.
