Thrash lowers salary cap number

The Washington Post reported that Thrash agreed to have his contract restructured so that it will only count about $1 million against the cap in '04. What a nice way to make an entrance in to Washington.
What do you think that this will do to Gardner's situation or the cuts of certain players that were impending before? any thoughts? ideas?

By the way McCant's deal leaves the 'skins $1.5 million under the cap.

With the way this offseason has gone it's really been difficult to gauge what Gibbs is up to. The whole Bryan Johnson deal had an interesting twist, Trotter being asked to seek a trade was a bit of a surprise (well, to me at least), and I think on draft day we could really see something crazy and unexpected.

I'll say that I don't think Gardner will be delt, but at this point nothing would surprise me.

I agree, I think alot of the things going on this offseason have been suprising and quite smart. For example, I thought what we did with Bryan Johnson was brilliant. We could have just let him go, but instead we got a 6th rounder out of it. This James Thrash acquisition came to me as a complete shock, as well. I do however, feel that we should keep Rod Gardner on our squad. I really dont think he's worth giving up for a 3rd or 4th ( which is all we could proboly get for him ). He is still a good reciver, possibly the second best on a deep team, so I think hes worth hanging onto, because his cap # isnt killing us or anything.

I think Thrash is showing agood attitude by restructuring the contract. That tells me that he's willing to come in here and basically do whatever he is told to with the best of his ability. A decent reciever with a good attitude spells a JG type player for me.

I'm glad to see James Thrash back in D.C. I was upset when he was traded a couple of season ago. I just hope he doesn't make the same offer to Lavernues Coles for the #80 jersey because it definitely ain't happening.

Trading Gardner for what everyone assumes is fair value would not make sense. Hes not a headache like Boston and T.O., were not pushing ot get rid of him. He counts for nill against the cap and was our former first round pick. What sense woud it make to get a 4th round practice squad player for him. Until he needs a new contract, and unless he wants big money they should keep him and the depth they have at receiver. We're had to many teams in recent years with no depth and were at a disadvantage when anyone got hurt.

If someone is willing to give us a second rounder, we should take it. IMHO. But I agree, for a 4th round pick, the value are too different.

If we had a second rounder I wonder if they woudl consider that as leverage to get another first round pick to get Taylor and Winslow. Not that this hasnt been said a number of times on the board but now we're discussing getting a second for Gardner, so its a new scenerio worth throwing in and hoping for

I think it would be tough to get fair value for him right now by himself, but if he is used in a multi player trade or some other scenerio it may be worth dealing him, I believe we will live without him, and if he could bring back a 1st rd pick I say do it.

Gardner and Trotter for a 2nd and 5th/6th rounder sounds fair to me. We need a team with needs a WR and MLB plus those picks available.

Consider this:- with Coles, Jacobs and McCants as your 1, 2 & 3 and Thrash in the wings, wouldn't you consider getting something for Gardner? Considering his propensity for dropping passes (something you can't have with a #2 WR IMHO), and the depth we now have, it seems to me a good move. I don't dislike him - this is just good business.

I still think Gardner is gone. Sure, he doesn't count much against the cap, but he may not fit what Gibbs wants out of a #2 WR. Plus on a team with still obvious holes, why have 5 WR that deserve to play (Coles, Gardner, McCants, Jacobs, Thrash). Except for Thrash, who's going to play special teams? Do you expect Jacobs to make a tackle?

He may end up staying if the Skins don't get a good enough offer. I think it boils down to draft day. A team may not get the WR they want in the 1st round and then the Skins throw Gardner out there to get a possible 2nd or 3rd/4th pick(s). I think it will happen...

I just heard Talyor Jacobs was already selected to the 2004 Pro-Bowl. His peers and coaches had a special early vote and voted him best practice player ever....
This sounds like the same premature talk last year about Ramsey being the next Bret Farve, ProBowl and Hall of Famer.
I hope for all our sakes and the Redskins, they both become all of this and more...
However they need to prove it on the regular season playing field before we induct them into the hall of fame. Good play on the practice field does not alway translate into great play in real games. Real games are much intense, physical and faster paced than practice. I will reserve my judgement on Taylor Jacobs until he proves on a consistent bases in real games. Placing Jacobs in front of Gardner, McCants and even Thrash in the depth chart is premature.

I don't think that's fair to Taylor Jacobs. First off, he was hurt most of the year trying to adjust to the NFL. Second, you could make that same argument for any college player, look great in college but not good enough in the pros. Sure, Jacobs may not move up the depth charts, but if his production in college and so far in mini camp may show that he will be better than Gardner.
