defensive strategy for denver?

I have pondered the thought of how to counter the denver running game on occasion, for every offensive scheme there is a defensive counter scheme, and my thought has been to attack their smaller linemen with smaller defensive linemen. If we go with a 3-4 and put our fastest lineman up front while keeping our LB's in striking distance, the reason I say this is the denver blocking scheme is almost the offensive version of the old Tom Landry flex defense where the linemen float along the line of scrimmage until the play reveals itself then they attack, keeping our LB's off the line of scrimmage may force their O-line to remain cohesive along the line on our 3 linemen, allowing our LB's to fill the gap wherever it opens, I believe this approach would really give Denver a difficult task in trying to block everyone.

The reason I believe this will work is they had an interesting breakdown last night on the NFL network, and why Denver is so successful, and they showed the colts who usually stymie the Denver running game, and their reasoning was that the Colt defense is to fast and beats the Denver linemen to the gap's, I say a heavy Linebacker D could very well have them scratching their heads, as well it would greatly enhance our ability to contain Plummer and keep him from rolling out if he knows we will have one of our very fast LB's waiting for him. Food for thought.

Good analysis, but I'm not sure the Skins have developed a solid 3-4 scheme. Perhaps replacing a DE with an upright Arrington on the strong side and three other LBs in the gaps might be a good compromise though.

personaly, i feel arrington needs to be played on the weak side, rather than the strong side. the less traffic there is, the more successfull arrington will be.

Yep, I saw the same thing and believe or not, I agree with you! I think if our linebackers over persue, Denver's going to catch us out of position. Maybe we can throw in some corner blitzes though to force the backs out of their patiences!

denvers runs stretch running plays. you beat it the same way you beat the counter tre, with penetration. denver cant run on smaller, quicker defences because the linebackers can get around the linemen.i think griff is going to have a great day. lamar mashall is going to have to have a great game if we are going to win. i think he matches up well this game. but we have to attack. if we take the wait for a hole to fill approach they will get 5 yards a run everytime.

Re: defensive strategy for denver?

Another thing with a 3-4 is that our DTs have been doing really good at occupying 3 linemen against the run (both guards and the center) allowing the LBs to make plays.

I think we have enough team speed to keep teams honest on the off tackle and stretch plays, we have enough input on how it works from Portis, and play really physical at the line. We are one of the best run stopping defenses in the league and we should be able to keep them under 100 yds.

When I saw the breakdown of the game all I could think of was Arrington having an impact tomorrow. But then they show Arrington overrunning plays and missing tackles...

Re: defensive strategy for denver?

I think that Denver knows they will have thier hands full with our defense. The key to the game needs to be for our offense to score at least 20 points. That way, the defense can just play thier normal game. I think our guys will be more than prepared after the second half showing they produced last week. They all want to prove that that was an anomoly.

Speeking of speed, did anyone else here notice that Williams actually dropped Joe Salavia off the line and back into coverage on one play? I've seen him do it with Griffin, but... damn.

Re: defensive strategy for denver?

Our defensive scheme is simple. Attack, attack, attack. Get the ball back and keep our offense on the deep side of our opponents. Ball positioning has been a thorn in our side in the games we have won. When the defense forces turnovers it gives us the opportunities to score more frequently and improve the confidence of the playcalling and execution. If Arrington is going to be apart of this defense, he's going to have to make an immediate impact tommorrow. No overrun plays or mistackles. Enough said.

I think our defensive plan of attack should be this

Re: defensive strategy for denver?

If Lavar is going to break out this is the perfect game, the denver offense is taylor made for him to really have a monster game, I wouldn't be opposed to bringing Sean taylor up to the line of scrimmage on the outside occasionaly to contain Plummer, but I would bring the backside LB on every play and fire him right at Plummer so the first time he deciedes to fake the run and roll the other way we have a player zero'd in on him, I would prefer either Lavar or Taylor, that's a scenerio where you need a player with pure athletic ability to run down and punish Plummer, we could throw Clemons in there as well.

I do believe it is more important this game to attack Denver with speed, we should really throw a lot of LB's at them, their linemen can't block what they can't catch.
