Expectations for the rest of the season...

Welp, here we are at the bye with a record of 3-6. There've been plenty of disappointments so far: Griffin's injury, the usual Redskins BS drama, being blown out by the Giants on TNF, Orakpo, etc. But there have been some positives as well: beating the Cowboys on MNF with our 3rd string QB, the emergence of Breeland, Robinson, and to a lesser degree Amerson, DJax's beast of a season, and the special teams' improvement(yeah, well, I wanted to list as many highs as lows, so I had to reach a little, don't judge me).

But aside from all that, the facts are the facts, and we have 3 wins through 9 games. I predicted a 7-9 record before the season started, and unfortunately that may have been a bit optimistic. Remaining games are vs. Tampa Bay, at San Francisco, at Indianapolis, vs. St. Louis, at the NY Giants, vs. Philadelphia, and vs. Dallas. If recent history can tell us anything, it's that there is a good chance we'll close out the season with only two more wins. That's what I see realistically, but maybe we can squeak another one in there somewhere and finish 6-10. That would still be a solid improvement over last year.

But who knows... maybe the RG3 that made Redskins fans everywhere believe comes out after the bye and we win 7 straight. Or maybe we crash and burn, losing every game from here on out, leading Snyder and Allen to fire Gruden, promote Haslett to HC, sign Carson Palmer to a 5 year deal worth 110 million, and... give Redskins fans everywhere hope again?

What sayeth the mob?

Re: Expectations for the rest of the season...

6-10 is probably the ceiling. I just want to see Griffin progress, cut down on the bonehead plays (like the late 2nd quarter interception at Minnesota) and look like the he is the future of the franchise. I want to see Haslett get canned. I don't care how injured the defense is.
You just can't allow a rookie QB with a half dozen NFL starts to drive the length of the field for a TD not once but twice in the 4th quarter.

7-9 and that's really pushing it. Most likely 5-11. I do think griffin plays the rest of the way and ends up with about 10 tds and 5 ints

Re: Expectations for the rest of the season...

Well - RG3 is back in there, and that unfortunatley is for better or worse. I think as long as he is in there - you hover around .500 worse case scenario, and if he plays well perhaps you squeak one or two out.

I understand the need for Snyder to tell Gruden that he is playing RG3, but in turn that meant we ended up benching the guy who had won two straight (Colt McCoy).

I also sort of wonder what kind of shit will hit the fan if the skins lose out, and i wonder if that ever comes up in anyones conversations - that the decision on starting QB was made by the owner.

I think it brings up the other great point that many posters have pointed out. It's going to be very tough to get good HC's and coordinators when it is well known that in actuality they have very little say on personnel, who to start, etc.. I can't imagine any legit HC coming here after Gruden when he already knows that he may not get the final say on who starts, etc...

I hope we finish better than last year. 6-10 sucks but it shows some improvement. I think in year two Gruden has to be at least 8-8 or he' gone....

Re: Expectations for the rest of the season...

As far as the playoffs go the season is over. To me the rest of the season is all about RG3 and if he shows enough development and promise to justify the team signing him to a big contract extension.

The sub-plot is Jim Haslett and the D. Can the D show progress and play well enough for JH to keep his job?

My expectations is by the end of the season RG3 should fully understand and should be able to execute Jay Gruden offense. If he cant, im looking in the offseason for a vet QB to come in and push RG3 for the starting job.

Re: Expectations for the rest of the season...

I want RG3 to continue to develop and for Gruden to work with him and make him an efficient/competent starter. I'd like to see Morris continue to improve and for the team to be a run first offense.

On defense, I'd like to see more in the development of Breeland and Amerson. Hopefully Phillip Thomas can come in and develop as well (and stay healthy). I also would like to see Murphy improve his game, I think this is a great opportunity.

Haslett and the entire defensive staff needs to go in the offseason; let the new DC bring his own staff. I think each aspect of the defense has messed up enough that it doesn't make sense to keep anyone IMO.

Finally, I really don't want to see the following players back next season: Chester, Polumbus, R. Clark, Paulsen, and maybe Meriweather. I hope the team focuses on the right side of the o-line and the safety position during the offseason. A replacement NT or FS in the first round would not be a bad idea if we have a high pick; if we have a low pick, I wouldn't mind taking in a guard or a tackle.

I honestly felt if the 'skins had taken care of business in Minnesota, They would have maybe dropped one more game (against the Colts) because the rest of the teams looked very beatable. Now since they obviously screwed the pooch against the Vikings, I don't know what to expect from them anymore.

My expectations are that the 'Skins PR folks will consistently f*** things up and, essentially, attempt to douse every spark of controversy with gasoline.

Re: Expectations for the rest of the season...

You know, I have to say that so far, I think Gruden is the right man for the job. I think he's trying to do everything he can to lessen all of the bull crap that seems to be associated with this team (off the field controversies, player favoritism, etc...) I think he really is a no nonsense coach. I also feel he has the tools and the ability to right the ship - BUT.....

I wonder if the world around him is going to allow him to do this. The media? The front office? The players? For once, I love having a coach who says that the best possible player is going to start - and that may not be the current starter. I love the idea that he is not sticking with RGIII no matter what in terms of the future for this team, even though I love RGIII. In the end, I want Gruden to build a winning program with a winning culture but in doing so, knowing that if it takes jettison the face of the franchise or a coach, or whoever it may be, I'm all for it. In the end, I'm more of a Washington Redskins fan than I am a fan of particular players. Sure, I have my favorites, but for the long term, my favorites are players who take care of business on the field.

Re: Expectations for the rest of the season...

My brain tells me 5-11
My gut tells me 6-10
My heart tells me 10-6

My brain tells me, RG3 can turn things around, but it's 50/50 at best that he'll pan out.
My gut tells me that he won't pan out.
My heart says he will become the elite QB he is supposed to be.

My brain tells me Haslett should go.
My gut tells me Haslett should go.
My heart tells me Haslett should go.
