Keim's take on the hire. As always on point: some things to worry about, some things to have hope.

Washington Redskins thoughts: New defensive coordinator Joe Barry - ESPN

Since you like Keim but don't seem to understand the networking issues that many here have raised, let's let Keim say it:

Quote:
It certainly looks like a case of being well-connected, with ties to Bruce Allen, Jay Gruden, Doug Williams and Raheem Morris in Tampa Bay and to A.J. Smith in San Diego. As I always say: Do you trust them to make the right decisions? It's easy to understand if you don't based on recent seasons and track records.

We won more with Vinny

I do understand the networking concerns that people are raising here. But some people make such a bad argument about it that they make it seem as though someone hired is automatically bad because they are connected to Allen or Gruden.

I've always been the wait and see type of person. I know Allen/Gruden haven't made the best choices, but hopefully they are turning the corner. Maybe the Callahan and McC hiring are signs that they are doing a better job at finding people they know, who are also well qualified.

At the end of the day, I'm just a fan, I just don't obsesses or pretend to know more than what I know. If I'm so positive things are going to fail, what's the point of being a fan?

A wait and see person is a good thing to be. So am I.

I have waited and watched Bruce Allen for five years and what I have seen is that the team regularly finishes in last place. Our record is worse than it was under Vinny. FIVE YEARS. And this is not even including his failure in Tampa.

As for being a fan when I know it will go to hell, the whole point of my posts is to get rid of Bruce so we can, hopefully, get back to winning. But a FIVE YEAR track record says we won't win until Bruce is gone.

Pulling the video out of the article...kinda cool video of Barry going over defense.

Like Keim says, we need a major over haul with talent.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

Will he (Barry) call more than 1 defensive play throughout the game? If yes, I'm willing to give him a fair shake before freaking out. I do like that he's a younger guy, that lions team was terrible, no coach was doing anything with that, won't hold it against him. Sucks the draft is all the way in May, I'm ready now.

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

Another guy from that Tampa Bay coaching staff was Mike Tomlin.

I mean, just b/c they have connections doesn't mean they are bad. To me, Barry was an unknown that didn't seem to have people banging on his door, couple that with his Detroit experience and the ties with BA from Tampa, well it makes me nervous.

To me, the key is can he scheme for what we have and develop players through his position coaches.

As others have said, this is on Jay. I think he gets this year and he probably knows it. If he and Barry don't show improvement on the field, then McC hires a new coach next year (warning: McC's replacement for Mike Nolan was Mike Singletary - not exactly a HOF coaching candidate).

Crossing my fingers, will wait and see, but just not getting my hopes up.

A positive I see in Barry is his track record in San Diego in developing young players, which will be needed here. As you said, we'll see how he schemes and whether he'll have enough talent to make a decent improvement.

I think it is a bit funny that it seems that Fangio would have been a Snyder/Allen hire (from the looks of it); whereas Barry seems more of a Allen/Gruden (I think more Gruden) hire. I know people here were stating that the team needs to let Gruden hire his coaches (McC said the same thing).

Re: 2015 Redskins Coaches/Coordinators News

All in all, so far this off-season:

Scot McCloughan: Major Score.

Bill Callahan: Knocking it out of the park.

Joe Barry: Potentially, anything from a complete whiff to a home run. In light of the candidates available, pretty much a pop-fly.

Anything but Haslett is better, I think Barry will surprise. I'm Sure he knows how to adjust, that's something Haslett could not do.

It's funny, because that's what so many Redskins fans tend to think about whatever position the Skins are trying to change. Except, as it so often turns out, it can get worse. The Redksins won four games this year with Haslett. Can it get worse than that? Yeah, it can get four games worse. Just ask Joe Barry.
