This whole situation shows how instant replay simply needs more tweaking. I think it ought not be the head ref who reviews the replay but an NFL official. What's the point of having a ref who has bias built in deciding whether the guy he has spent the last 4 months with and is very good friends with got something wrong? I think it would be impossible to expect them to have a completely fair and unbalanced view. Get someone who doesn't mind revealing that the refs blew it. |

Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
What good does it do to "send in tapes" if you can't take the "L" out of the standings. The results are the same... "I'm sorry" doesn't get you into the playoffs at the end of the year. I appreciate the effort by Gibbs, maybe these Refs will learn and not make the mistake again. I sometimes feel like the "call on the field" is so golden, that the head ref is scared to overturn it. If everyone knows Alstott was not in, but the Ref still did not over turn it, after looking at it from 2 or 3 angles for 1 minute and a half, then later the NFL officals come out and say.... "Well we looked at it for 2-3 more minutes and it looks different now" Geez! We got screwed, just face it!!

True you can't take away the loss, but as a coach you can't sit back and let horrible calls like that go unnoticed by the league.

Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
One more thought on this and then I will quit thinking about Tampa and move on to the Raiders.... If someone would have told me the Skins would have put up 35 points on the Bucs last week, I would not have watched and put it down as a "W". Forget all of "bad calls" because there is no way that the Skins should have allowed Chris Simms and the Bucs to score 36 points. Maybe 17-21 but not 36. Our Defense lost the game for us, not the Refs.

Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
The defense AND the refs lost this one.
I don't see how we can just dismiss the 17 points that were handed to the Bucs on a silver platter. |

Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
When all is said in done our D gave up one big play after another and Sims played his best game as a QB. I will agree that the calls hurt our chances but if our D plays their game we still win and remember the turnovers in the first half gave them atleast 14 points.

I do agree our D has to play better. However, as a coach Williams has to put our players in better positions. We can not send 7 or 8 guys at the end of game (one of those being our best corner) after the QB and leaving a rookie, 2nd string safety, and #2 corner on the outside one on one. That is bad playcalling!! Especially since these blitzes have NOT worked all day, and Simms was eating us alive everytime we blitzed him. Williams has to swallow some of that ego and adjust his game plan or defensive calls. This has been a problem for the last few games. No pressure on the blitz, means big plays down field. |

Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
I don't question GW bringing pressure, that's his MO and always has been. If you can't get to the QB when bringing extra guys you have to tip your hat to the Bucs for picking things up.
GW simply is not a passive coach who is going to sit back in coverage, he's going to come after you even when conventional wisdom says not to. Personally I'd rather lose by being aggressive than to see a team dink and dunk their way down the field while you're in prevent mode. |

I dont really question the aggresivness, but the package I do. We blitzed Springs on that TD play, which I think was a mistake. Springs is our "shutdown" guy. If we were leaving anyone in single coverage, it should have been him, not Walt Harris.

Re: Joe Gibbs Sending tapes to NFL
Springs also had 6 sacks last year, so he's proven to be an effective blitzer.
