Getting my J&J vaccine Wednesday and rejoining Costco (that's where I'm getting it).

Nine fully vaccinated members of the New York Yankees — including one player and eight other staff — tested positive for the virus that causes covid-19 last week. To many, this may suggest the vaccines, which are extremely effective, don’t work as well as advertised. In fact, the Yankees outbreak is a case study showing how well the vaccines are working.

Let’s first note that data from tens of thousands of people enrolled in clinical trials — and hundreds of millions of other partially or fully vaccinated people — have shown that the vaccines administered in the United States are safe and effective. All the cases on the Yankees came from its traveling party — the group of players and other personnel who go to road games, about 50 to 60 people. That’s not enough to overrule the existing data.

But even if we focus just on those 50 to 60 people, does this outbreak cast doubt on vaccines? No. Of the nine cases, at least seven showed no symptoms. The only one who has so far was the first case to appear, third-base coach Phil Nevin. It is possible we will find out the vaccine “failed” only once — in Nevin — allowing him to build up a high enough viral load to spread it to eight others, all of whose vaccinated bodies likely fought it off quickly before they could develop symptoms or transmit it.

That is the vaccines working as designed. While they don’t eliminate the possibility of becoming infected, they virtually eliminate the risk of severe disease and death by preparing your immune system to fight the virus so it can respond more quickly and strongly. Cases that would have been hospitalizations become colds, and symptomatic cases become asymptomatic. Most infections are avoided entirely. The vaccine works like a strong head wind from the outfield, turning homers into doubles and doubles into harmless fly outs. These effects may be the result of a more powerful immune response in vaccinated individuals, which is also thought to reduce viral loads and thus further spread of the virus.

Are we really surprised at this point? CDC has done a garbage job.

While trump def struggled and sucked with messaging, Biden administration hasn’t improved 1 damn bit.

90 does not equal 100, simple math folks. The CDC has never said if you are vaccinated you'll never get sick.

Don't most vaccines completely wipe out things? Like so people still actually get measles or polio, etc., in the U.S.?

Most people get vaccinated when they are kids as well, so this whole thing is new to most American's.

So people that are not aware shouldn't be shamed (not saying that is happening here), the information just needs to be continously pumped out there.

I'm not getting the vaccine because I'm expecting 100% protection, it's moreso, so I just don't have to hear about it anymore. And once government starts mandating vaccine cards for things like flights, that I don't have to worry about it.

No vaccines are 100% effective. Take the flu vaccine for example. Does it prevent you 100% from getting the flu? No, never has. It's generally 30-40% effective and it will help reduce the severity if you do get it. Some vaccines are more effective than others. The idea is to get enough of the population vaccinated to reduce the spread and severity of the disease.

I guess people just need to be able to equate this vaccine to the flu shot.

Is the flu shot actually categorized as a vaccine? It's just always been called the flu shot, never really thought about it before.

I guess the vaccine category is way more broad than I thought it was. Having to get it every year doesn't seem like a "vaccine" to me. But I've been wrong before and I'll be wrong again.

If this booster shot each year becomes a thing, I wonder if you'll have to get it from the same company you got your original vaccine from. Or will it not matter, just need to get 1 of them.

My bubble of contentment has been burst since Hogan has lifted the mask mandate. Over the last year I have eaten out away from home way more than I ever have, knowing that I didn't have some line cook mouth breathing all over my food. Ordered burgers at Casa Mia's in Parkton last night not a single person with a mask guess I am back to eating at home it was nice while it lasted.

Edit: My quirk has nothing to do with covid but from working in restaurants in college. I quickly learned how to make my own food so I could eat out less.

Haha. This is great. So backwards, but understandably so. I worked in alot of kitchens in my day, and yeah great point. Line cooks with masks = awesome.
I never looked at it like that...somehow the pandemic was a very sanitary time to eat out. Lol.

Love making appointments that aren't really appointments. Get to Costco and the 1st thing I see is appointments not necessary and a large number of people waiting in make shift waiting area. Went faster than I thought but still had to wait like 45 minutes past my supposed time.
