Brunell & Other Offseason Moves (Merged Thread)

I'm worried about CP's health. Since the 4th quarter of the Philly game, he's been utterly ineffective. Maybe it was the defenses, but we had no running game at all for nine straight quarters.

We have a desparate need at wide receiver. I would even consider Terrell Owens, but only for a one-year deal, with small bonus money, but heavy duty incentives. Basically make it so financially attractive for Owens to keep his mouth shut and be, well, if not a good teammate, at least not an awful teammate.

We also need a tight end, and offensive line help.

Medium term need is quarterback. We maybe get another year out of Brunell. But if they can be opportunistic and pick someone up in the 5th or 6th round, maybe take a chance.

And, I realize this may be heretical, but let Arrington go. He wasn't even that good this year. He's undisciplined and hasn't really bought into Greg Williams' system. And given all the money they just threw at Williams, and the way Arrington's contract is structured, they need to spend that money on free agent additions.

I am probably in the majority when I say this, but under no circumstances do I think the Skins should bring in T.O. I understand what you are saying about the incentive laden deal, but a) would T.O. sign such a contract and b) do you really think he would keep his month shut for all the money in the world? He has already destroyed two franchises and crushed the psyche of two (Pro Bowl) Quarterbacks. He had the absolute perfect situation in Philadelphia. He was on a team with a perenial Pro Bowl QB and in an offense that throws the ball like 60% (or more) of the time yet he still could not find it within himself to SHUT THE HELL UP. He is not the guy you want to bring into the locker room of a team that - at least from the outside - seems to have developed some very good chemistry. He is poison - I keep thinking back to Jeff George in 2000 - and does not deserve another chance in the NFL. Moreover, considering Jason Campbell could potentially be making a push for the starting job (though I don't think he should get it) you really don't want T.O. around talking about how horrible the QB is and how he is always open and someone just needs to get him the ball.

On the second part. They have their future QB in Campbell so they don't need to be scraping the bottom of the barrel in order to pick someone up in the 5th or 6th round. They need a veteran third stringer - a la Tim Hasselbeck - to man the sidelines. Marc Bulger and Tom Brady aside (can you believe they were in the same draft class?) you don't find too many QB gems that late...you are more likely to end up with Sage Rosenfels...or worse...

I would imagine we can all agree that Brunell isn't really the "QB of the future" for the Skins, primarily because of his age. I would assume that Brunell stays on next year and starts - but what is everyone's take on when he'll leave? Do you think it will take a major injury or a really lousy season for him to leave, or will there be some other kind of transition to J. Campbell or another QB?

Barring injury Brunell should and will go into the season as the starter.. Hey, he did more than ANYONE on this board thought he would do.. If before the season, hell even in like week 3, someone would have said he would have 3000+ yds and 20+TD they would have been run off the board.. I think he has 6-8 more good games in him. Campbell isn't going to beat him out in camp but needs to be IMPRESESSIVE in the preseason to give the team confidence that he will do well when he plays. Brunell isn't going to be healthy for 16 games again and guys quit fooling yourselves RAMSEY IS NOT GOING TO BE A REDSKIN IN '06 so the development of Campbell needs to be the focus of Gibbs, Breaux and Musgrave this spring & summer.

A healthy Brunell should be our starter, but I think if this year proved anything....he cant go a complete season anymore. SHOULD he be our starter next year, and get hurt, I dont think he should force himself back. Let someone else play a couple games so he can be healthy and effective.

On the QB front, I think that unless Ramsey or Campbell just step forward and claim the starting job in training camp, Brunell will start the season. But, I think Campbell will be getting himself groomed to take over, if the need arises.

brunnel will surely be our starter, but we need to pass on the batton and train campbell very hard

I agree with most of your points Paintrain. We need to resign Betts, we need o-line depth because Ray Brown is retiring, and Cory Raymer should be gone. I do believe that Walt Harris could be a good nickel corner, and hopefully Rogers stays healthy, because he has progressed well enough to be a #2. I saw why we keep Ade Jimoh every year, he has made progress as a corner this year when Springs was down, and he is a special teams beast. We do need depth though, because we saw how backups played when starters went down this year. I do think we need a pass rushing defensive end, Daniels was strong at the end of the year, but he wasn't all year long, and Wynn is valuable as a run stopper, but not much of a pass rusher. I think we could keep both, reduce their cap hit a bit, and sign a situational pass rushing lineman, someone like Robert Mathis for the Colts.

everyone agrees that campbell is our qb of the future right? y not start him next season. yes brunell is good but is he really gonna win us a super bowl. kitna was still good when the bengals started palmer.

I love what Brunell did for this team but I just think our offense was as good as it could be with him at the helm this year. It needs to be better. If he can get better again next year then maybe he can take us to the next level but he isn't going to. Attention is needed here. Whether Ramsey is the answer or not I have no idea but I'd love to see him get another shot. He didn't get much of one this year. I don't think we go out and try to find someone else but I think it needs to be realized that Brunell is simply old and doesn't have the physical ability to do the little things that a real good QB does. You watch Brady or Manning they slide and make their own passing lanes. It's just an atheltic move they can do without even thinking about it. I can't think of Brunell doing this at all. When he needs a passing lane he rolls out or ends up getting sacked. We also need another quality WR so we never have to run a 1 WR set ever again. These should be outlawed by the league. It allows the D to put 9 in the box. Unacceptable. I think Brunell is a quality backup. In fact I think he can extend his career in the lague as a backup for three or four years but he simply isn't a SB QB and that's what we need. This team can be good again next year but it likely can't be any better with Brunell in there. As much as I love the guy and his toughness and hard work and good decisions we need to upgrade. Perfect example of a get you close QB.

On the one hand I think, "If this guy could just get another weapon on offense, he could be amazing." Given that he only had two viable receiving threats, it's quite amazing that he was able to do so well. Moreover, he took us to the playoffs for the first time in 6 years.

On the other hand I think, "He's 35, inconsistent, and we need to build towards the future while Gibbs is still here."

I really don't know what we should do.

I really notice when watching some other quality QBs how just well crappy Brunell looks in the pocket. They slide around and make passing lanes. They step up in the pocket to diminsh pressure. They calmly throw accurate passes. They just look a lot smoother. I think this is really a function of age because to me he looks a lot like another old QB: Brett Favre. Favre makes much worse decisions and would simply be a disaster on this type of team, but Brunell just doesn't look to me like he has the physical ability to be a SB QB. He looks like a good game manager with an adequate arm and a little wiggle left. He knows what to do and how to do it but he also knows what he can no longer do so he doesn't even try. It seems like drop back find the open guy or roll out. There's no hang in the pocket and make a play happen using a progression. And when he does check down it LOOKS like a check down rather than a smooth play. It seems almost manic. I am just struck by the difference between say Brady and Brunell. It is 100% obvious to me. Of course I know crap and maybe it is function of something else that I don't know about. If it is then I say I am an idiot and lets fix this other thing but from my years of watching this game I think Brunell just has a ceiling too low for a contending to able to reasonably expect to be in the hunt on a year to year basis. There's a reason Dilfer wasn't the QB in Balt long. He isn't that good. He did great that SB year keeping them out of bad situations but they knew they needed to get someone better in there to be successful long term(they just didn't find the right guy). I like long term planning.

I do, he's now the backup, I kinda believe that our offensive woe's are due to his inability to take chances downfield, late in the game when there's nothing to lose he will take shots, kind of funny how things start opening up on offense when he has done that. I feel we need a QB that can make all the throws and can check down to a third reciever. Regardless of what Brunell did this season, he did nothing when it count's. If we lost because we were outplayed that's one thing, but Brunell didn't show up. Perhaps he's performing the way Gibbs want's him to? Who know's right now, but something has to change, and I think it start's with Brunell!

And for all those who believe we need another WR to compliment Moss, well we knew that before the draft and came away with a 3rd string QB, it will be curious to see what we do with our next to nothing draft picks this year?
