Die Hard is a movie I can still watch today and enjoy. Same for the Predator.

I wish the combat in platoon didn't feel like eight year olds playing with cap guns

I wouldn't consider that an action movie per se. I think there can be a difference between a war movie and an action movie sometimes. Plus, any movie that wins Best Picture that year obviously had too much going for it to be a cheesy action movie.

Two classics that weren't mentioned yet were "Red Dawn" and I think the other title is "Clash of the Titans". You know, the one with Medusa and the mechanical owl.
