It's nice there's no hype

28th(27)Redskins5-11-0
ESPN'S POWER RANKINGS

Obviously Jason Campbell will be in the spotlight in Washington. But the glare will be even brighter on defensive coordinator Gregg Williams. Regarded as one of the NFL's best defensive minds, Williams' defense ranked 31st in the NFL last season.

------------------------

Usually the Skins are holding up the offseason Lombardi right now and all the analysts are touting the Redskins to be the team to beat in the NFC.

I think it's nice to not have so much pre-season hype and tension for J Campbell to perform under. He should be able to relax knowing that not much is expected of him around the league. Anything he does above average is going to be gravy. The Skins always fell on their face when picked to do well during the upcoming season.

Last time we weren't hyped (with all the new additions) going into the regular season we ended up winning five straight and a playoff game.

I agree. Let's lie low and surprise the league. There will be lots of attention on Romo and the Cowboys and McNabb and the Eagles. Let's go out and win early and set the tone for a great season. And let's hope if Portis plays at all tomorrow night that he runs to the sidelines ASAP if we turn the ball over.

Re: It's nice there's no hype

Well agreed.

There is no hype because the Redskins didn't live up to the hype last year. Especially what the defense ended up being ranked at the end of the year. it was horrific.

Maybe this year, the Redskins won't need to win 5 in a row to make the playoffs.

Re: It's nice there's no hype

since theres no hype then the skins arent all "big-headed" and "high" on themselves. I'm sure J. Campbell wouldnt be able to perform under this pressure.

Good Thread!

No offense, but it's been years since our winning offseason brought us any real hype besides from fans. ESPN and other media outlets have more or less said "prove it" and we've failed to do so relatively consistently.

Well, I can't speak for the DC area, but out in the rest of the world, the Skins haven't gotten any respect or hype since 99. We were predicted to have 4 or 5 wins when we won 10 a couple years ago, we've been down for a while, and they keep kicking. It's about time we stand up and kick back.

Except for last offseason, when a lot of media outlets had us pegged to do quite well in 2006. They were proven wrong and the team did poorly. There is no reason the "experts" can't be proven wrong about their current predictions. I bet you'd agree with the statement that "experts" are quite fallible.

I don't know which outlets you're talking about, but the best we were predicted to do is around 8-8 last year, and we failed at that.

Re: It's nice there's no hype

I could care less about predictions! They are always wrong anyway. ALL TEAMS ARE 0-0 NOW.

It's nice being the underdog, maybe just maybe a few teams will be dumb enough to over look us just as most all reporters do, after a season full of injuries.

We will right the ship, and be a contenter! It's times like these where Joe is at his very best at getting the most outta his teams.

Re: It's nice there's no hype

I'm with jsarno, I don't remember many people giving us much of a chance because they considered 2005 a fluke. Considering we had to win 5 games in a row to get a wildcard birth it wasn't the most convincing run to the playoffs.

skinsfan_nn, while your optimism is nice, I don't think many teams are overlooked in todays NFL. Even the worst team is supremely talented and can beat you if you don't prepare. The preparation for each team each week is what is most mind blowing about this sport to me. I hope you're right and that we are a contender, but I really need to see if our offense can score consistently and keep putting points up even when we have a lead.

All I'm saying, is I understand our placement in the power rankings, and I can see where fans of other teams and the media is skeptical of this Redskins team.

That, and I'd like to see that the run defense doesn't get mowed over like somebody's lawn.

hard to have any hype when your 5-11 last year. Every time we have hype we fall on our face. 2000 and 2006.
