Matty, I agree that the Patriots did go out and sign Thomas to some big money and trade for Moss. They may have signed some other guys but I don't think they were huge names.

Anyway, I think that is how a team should use free agency: if they are 90% there and they need that extra 10% then they should go out and buy it.

Does anyone thing that the Redskins are 90% there? Have we built a solid enough team foundation to warrant going and getting those last two pieces to the puzzle?

When I look at this team I see some aging stars, overachieving younger guys, and a few stars in the prime of their career. To me, the Skins focus should be on building that solid foundation for the future - not continuing to trade our future away to bring in some hotshot receiver who I can guarantee right now, will not produce after he has signed the monster contract.

I do think we are 90% there I think a D-Lineman & WR are our weak points on this team. We lost several games by a TD or less. TB, GB, DAL, NYG, PHI that's five games we lost by and TD or less if you look at the Giants they aren't that much better than us other than the D-Line & QB. I disagree I don't think it's all about money with Chad true he is 30 but he wants to win and he feels the Bengals don't accept him for who he is that's a passionate player that's an entertainer what is wrong with that?

I think we had a good, solid team last year. I think losing our coaching structure sets us back a good year because we are talking about the offensive players learning an entirely new system, and although Blatche may not change everything around the verdict is out on whether he is going to field a defense that plays at the same caliber as Williams.

I wouldn't say we are rebuilding but at the same time, this is not continuity.

Therefore, I feel like the notion that we are a few pieces away from contending for a Super Bowl, although admirable, is overly optimistic.

Here is the reality for us: We are a team with some solid veteran talent, some young talent (although I think we have some serious injury concerns with our younger talent), and some over-achieving younger players.

When our core of veterans really starts getting over the hill however, what is left?

That is why my perspective is, and always has been, lets use the draft and build our core instead of going and cherry picking stars that are going to sell tickets.

We were 90% there in 2005, so we used that philosophy to try to get over the hump in 2006, and it ended up backfiring.

The point is this: there are many ways to successfully build a team and there is never an oppertune time for a bad move. The 2.0 Gibbs-era defense was built through free agency and supplimented in the draft--and that worked out pretty well, 2006 aside.

Re: Ocho Cinco In B&G

Back to Briggs, he's not going to be 28 until midseason, so signing him makes some sense.

But how much more sense does it make to sign him now than last year when we would have had to trade the pick that became Laron Landry?

What I don't understand is how can people want CJ when he's so combustible. We've got a young qb with limited experience who is learning yet another system and a first time head coach. That's a challenging situation and we saw how CJ handles not being in a winning situation this past year. I just think it's a bad idea. Great talent, not a great fit on this team. If JG were still coaching, I'd say go for it, he can handle it. But Zorn, who really knows?

Mel Kiper just said on ESPN NFL show that it is a strong WR class coming out this year.

Well according to WP link that was posted awhile back, they were talking about getting rid of McCardell (Why???) and possibly Caldwell? (I'm not sure. I don't remember) That would leave room to draft a WR. Plus Espy might be back this season, correct?

McCardell is old and may retire.

Caldwell has knee issues.

Re: Ocho Cinco In B&G

if we do pick up johnson who will be our number 3 wr. Are we goin to put el in the slot like wes welker in NE. Id much rather pick up a roy williams for a second round pick. He's bigger then johnson, granted not as fast but, will be more of team player and not cost as much as johnson will. Can someone give me the downside to picking up williams over johnson?

There is no downside but it's been reported that Detroit is not interested in trading him unless they get an "overwhelming" offer for him.

And my guess is that ARE would be the slot receiver.

If we could get Roy Williams for a 2nd round pick, I think that's a no-brainer. But I'd need to see the link. Everything I've seen sounds like they are looking for a major deal to trade him.

Don't expect Roy Williams to be traded - Detroit Lions: News, Blogs, Photos, Audio, Schedule & Stats - MLive.com

Re: Ocho Cinco In B&G

and yea johnson is not doubt a elite receiver, but why do the redskins need to reward a player who would like to come to this team just for the big pay day. Why do we need to blow up our payroll for this one player?

I voted no, only because of the potential attitude disruptions and the overpaid price the skins are likely to pay....I do agree that someone like him would be a good catch
