Stuart Schweigert a Redskin

Diehard88 did beat me to this one, but I thought it deserved its own thread.

re: Stuart Schweigert a Redskin

Sounds like a decent signing.

Comment: Schweigert has excellent size for the position and enough speed to be effective covering the deep half of the field. He has some straight-line to him in that he does not redirect or change directions well and and can overrun plays when he comes in out of control. He has very good recognition skills and is very quick to pull the trigger. He does a good job of reading the quarterback and appears to have good route recognition, allowing him to get a good jump on the ball from deep zone. He can struggle when forced to lock up with a tight end or running back in man coverage. He can be an explosive hitter when he has time to build up momentum but is a bit stiff in the hips and not naturally explosive in a small area. He tends to come out of his pedal in stages and builds to speed when closing on the ball. While Schweigert is not special as a safety he is a blue-collar type and more than adequate.

As long as we keep him closer to the line than Landry plays, we aren't going to see any of the painful angles he took on tackle "attempts" in Oakland last year. He's a better cover guy than Doughty is, but Reed is stronger against the run.

It should be a fun training camp battle.

I think Vernon Fox is history. Also, Schweigert is superfast, he ran a 4.47 forty at the combine. Same year as Sean, and he ran it faster than Sean.

Also, Chris Horton is probably not going to make the team. How impressed can the team be with him to add two safeties in four days?

Or perhaps Vernon Fox is gone? I mean Schweigert kinda solves the need for veteran influence at safety.

I think Horton will make it. Last year they kept five safties and four corners. Of course Prielou was often used as a nickel corner.

GW liked safeties that he could play in the nickel packages and all those guys can play special teams. It will be interesting to see if Blache wants to keep as many safeties on the roster as GW did. It appears he does, or they're just worried about that position & looking to make competition as tough as possible.

After thinking about it, I think we will keep five corners this year. Tryon, Torrence, Springs, Rogers, and Smoot. If Rogers is on the PUP list, we probably keep 5 safties till Rogers is ready. Barring anyone comes up injured, which if they like Horton he probably will. He also could end up on the practice squad.

re: Stuart Schweigert a Redskin

Maybe the saftey we should be concerned about is Laron "What Autograph Signing?" Landry.

OTA Update - Redskins Insider
"Defensive back Shawn Springs and LaRon Landry, who have not been participating in most of the team's offseason programs, are not present for the first of eight OTA sessions. Springs trains in Arizona, and did not take part in most of last year's offseason programs, while Landry, a second-year safety, has drawn some raised eyebrows around Redskins Park with his absence this spring."

Please stop, that would be making something out of absolutely nothing. The kid is probably choosing to work out on his own just like Springs does.

Did you see him in the race video with Clinton Portis? Landry certainly looks in shape to me, he looked absolutely chiseled. Not to mention fast as hell.

Landry's going to have a huge year, he's definitely nothing to worry about.

Stuart Schweigert is a decent signing, he is a marginal upgrade over Doughty. I think we will end up keeping five safeties on the roster this year, those being: LaRon Landy, Stuart Schweigert, Reed Doughty, Chris Horton, and Kareem Moore. Vernon Fox, Justin Hamilton, and Patrick Ghee are most likely goners.

Everything I've heard about this guy hasn't been good so far. I hope he's able to contribute and make the team, but if he gets cut I won't be crying for him.
