Portis MVP Midway Through

ESPN - Rest assured, Portis has been the MVP so far - NFL

Lets hope he continues this great stretch of games, even if it is on one knee sometimes haha. Good read.

Re: Portis MVP Midway Through

If he and the line can keep this up down the stretch, we're in good shape. I think I got lost and ended up spending the night in Altavista one night. Is'nt that near Smith Mountain Lake?

Re: Portis MVP Midway Through

Me and my girlfriend stayed at Roanoke a couple of days this past summer. Right down from the Big Red Star. We were just traveling down the parkway. I got lost going camping at Smith Mountain Lake a few years ago and stayed one night in Altavista. I fish alot and SML was great. Don't know if you know where Lake Burton is but I went fishing there one time too. If you like the outdoors like I do, Southwestern Virginia is a pretty cool place. Of course it's pretty nice here too, close to the beach. If Portis can stay healthy and keep up this pace, we have a good chance of going a long way this year. At this point, he's MVP hands down.

OK, I'm pretty sure I won't be making any friends with this one. So let me diclamier first by saying again, I'm new and a little retarded still. =)

But I just had a thought today. Is Clinton Portis really that great a running back....Or do we just use him all the time?

What I mean is, are there other running backs in the league that are as good or better, who would be just as close to the record or even further along, if they were used as frequently as we use Portis?

I don't think you can say that using Portis frequently is the reason why he is having a career season. He isn't averaging 30+ carries a game, and JC has put up some very good numbers. Last week he went for 328 and Portis had 126.

The fact of the matter is that Portis is running well because he dedicated himself to Redskin Park this offseason. The line is run blocking extremely well, and we have a pretty balanced offenese. We may lean on the run game to get things going, but that is becasue it is effective.

No offense, but that is retarded. Just look at the numbers, like the article says only Tomlinson has had more yards then him since he's been in the league, and I'd contend that if he can stay healthy and productive for a few more seasons, he'll surpass even Ladanian.

Now, he has run behind two teams that perenially have good offensive lines, and yes we have always relied on him, he has in fact carried this team since he's been here (obviously Ladell took over for a little). But even when our line was injured last season, and he was still a little hobbled from the year before he still put up the kind of numbers you expect from a starting running back. Also remember that he holds the Redskins single season rushing record. He has consistantly put up good numbers no matter how we've used him.

And this year he is just playing out of his mind. Does he get alot of opportunities? Yes, but he is breaking off 6-7-8 yard runs in the fourth quarter when they know it's coming. Several times he has run the ball on crucial short yardage situations and somehow despite a good push from the D-line he has dug it out to move the sticks, or score. And It seems like he is setting records every week.

So, okay, can anyone say for sure that if we had Marion Barber rushing for us that he wouldn't be putting up the same numbers? Of course not, but if you consider that Clinton Portis has been a top-teir running back in the NFL for nearly all of his 7 year career, albeit quietly, and that he admittedly put extra effort in this off-season to be in good shape it is not suprising that he is leading the league in rushing. If you ask me, he deserves most of the credit, whether or not he is getting the ball alot he is still producing every time he does.

If you look at his yards per carry he's averaging around 5 yards each time he runs the ball. That is excellent. 20 carries, 100 yards. If a back is only averaging 3.5 ypc. 20 carries, 70 yards. You see the difference? Portis is doing very well this year which is WHY we're giving him the ball so much. Is he that great a running back? Yes, but the o-line is important also.

It's cool. Like I said, I am completely oblivious. I chosse to jump into it, and I chose to use this board as my learning grounds. I learn anything best by just getting involved, even if I make stupid mistakes. I expect a little hazing as I go, maybe even cruel tutelage from time to time. If I couldn't take the heat I'd get out of the kitchen. I'll learn one day, even if its at the school of hard knocks, ya know? Truth is the thought just occured to me. I didn't look at the records, and as a newcomer to a culture I maybe should have watched my words more carefully. I basically just did the equivelent of going to Ireland and saying "So you guys are all useless drunks...right?'' lol. You do that, you deserve your comeupins. I really like seeing Portis play, I was just curious how the stats measure up.

Brees yes, but Collins? You are kidding. He's doing a fine job keeping the ship steady but he is very much the beneficiary of a strong D and running game. Were it not for Mannings INT's Monday night, the Titans could easily have had their first loss.

And Ryan? Again, where would he be without his running game? Maybe if he'd won last week I'd give that suggestion more credence. The kid is playing great, but MVP? Nope.

I'd rank Campbell above both of them, even with his fumbles and I don;t think he's close to MVP.

My top 5 so far:

Portis
Brees
Joey Porter
Fitzgerald
Haynesworth

Maybe Rivers if SD can start winning again - the losses aren't his fault.

Don't worry about it redwarrior. It's better to ask and learn than to stay silent and ignorant. It's even worse to be ignorant and act like you know everything. Hang in there. You'll get it.
