Question About Oklahoma

I have a bet with a friend regarding whether Oklahoma is a Southern state or a Midwestern state. What say you guys? Is it part of the south or the midwest? What do Oklahoman consider themselves?

Re: Question About Oklahoma

I would say South. I cut the Midwest off at Kansas/Missouri

Re: Question About Oklahoma

It's West of and doesn't border the Mississippi (though the same is true of Texas). I have always considered it part of the midwest but apparently educators feel differently:

Wikipedia seems to agree: Midwestern United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Although, apparently, Oklahoma is not a part of the "historic south". Southern United States - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Re: Question About Oklahoma

While it is NOT thought of as a Southern state, check out the links for Mason Dixon line and project West on the following link....Hmmmm
AND during the Civil War (not a state until 1907), the Indians basically aligned themselves with the South.

Re: Question About Oklahoma

The way I see the US.

Below Virginia = Redneck, Above Virginia = Yankee, Texas = Tejas, The Left Coast, in between Virginia and the Left Coast = fly over country.

So, Oklahoma is fly over country.

Re: Question About Oklahoma

When I lived there I thought that they considered themselves part of the Mid West. It depends on who you ask really, but accourding to the US Census Breau, it is a "West South Central State".

Re: Question About Oklahoma

Being where it is, parts of it could probably be labeled southern, while other parts could be labeled midwestern with maybe even a little south west mixed in as well. As a whole, and only given two options, I'd probably call it a midwestern state.

You have to fight about 7,769,089 Virginians and at least one current Maryland resident for that title.

I'd give those from Mary Land & North Cack-a-lacky a pass. Y'all seem like good people.

Re: Question About Oklahoma

In my view:

"The South"
Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, Arkansas, Louisiana, Texas

"The North"
Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachussets, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine

"The Midwest"
Indiana, Illinois, Iowa, Missouri, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma

Then you got the "Southwest" and the "Northwest", and some states I don't know what to do with, like Maryland, Ohio, Michigan, and Colorado.
