Greg Williams: Catch-22?

So we lose Pierce and are going to plug in Marshall. We may lose Smoot and plug in Wilds etc... If this all plays out and the D is great again despite these changes, you have to think that Williams will be gone to a HC job somewhere. I love his loyalty to Joe but the temptation will be great. On the other hand, if the D falls off with these losses, now we have a sub-par offense and a less than stellar D. 6-10 all over again. No HC job for Williams and no playoffs for the Skins.

not necessisarily. if he resisted head coach offers last year he can do it again. plus gregg williams can take good players and make them look great. he can take great players and make them look like elite players. antonio pierce is one of those good players. im sure lemar marshall will fit in nicely. and if smoot leaves, then walt harris will be the #2 cornerback.

That's what I'm hoping. He made AP look great and he did stick around. he is one of the highest paid DC's in the league, BUT everybody seems to want to be a HC!

I'm very confident that Gregg Williams will succeed Gibbs as the HC of the skins. I'm pretty sure that he's not going anywhere in the next 3-4 years (he has kids in school, he likes the D.C. area, and he gets paid plenty already.) In the event Gibbs were to sign a long extension to his own contract, then I could perhaps see GW leaving for a HC job somewhere else. But I don't see GW even considering leaving Washington for at least 3 or 4 more years.

I totally agree, It is apparant that with Gregg Williams turning down numerous head coaching positions last year that Dan Snyder, Coach Joe Gibbs, and himself have a pretty strong oral agreement leaving Williams as the heir apparant when it is time for Gibbs' inevitable departure (but only after we win three more rings!!). I would stake my fortune in ex redskin jerseys (i own bailey, coles, armstead, and davis.....kinda pisses me off) that Williams will be eventually find his name amongst the greatest redskin coaches i.e. Lombardi, Gibbs, Allen, and Flaherty.

here GW gets a chance to do what he loves (coaching) and avoid all the hassles and headaches of head coaching... not only that, he gets his say on his players, gets paid well, and has the chance to get a good team in place before assuming the reins... most HC openings are for sh*thole teams... here he has a shot at taking over a winner that'll have cap sanity and he'll know what ind of owner he has ahead of time.... assuming all goes well and all those are pluses. What i really do like is that he's a good GM in terms of getting players and coaches of quality and using them effectively.

williams gets paid more than most head coaches here and he can focus on what important to him with the defense its the best opportunity for him and he knows it.

William's is a young guy yet he has plenty of time to become a head coach again, I believe as well that they have a verbal agreement that when Gibb's step's down William's assumes the headcoaching position, on the interm William's has the luxury of learning from a hall of fame coach which he need's if he want's to succeed on the offensive part of the game.

The Pittsburgh Steelers are known as being cheap and lose lots of players to free agency......but they seem to plug lesser knowns into their system and it works out quite nicely..........I think Williams has the same touch. I HAVE FAITH IN WILLIAMS

The fact that Williams was already a HC helps keep him year, at least for few years. Plus, as others have said, it is known or assumed that they have an agreement that he will succeed Gibbs in a few years, and he is getting paid more than a lot of head coaches anyway.

The Gregg Williams problem isn't as big as one would think. He did not do well as a head coach in Buffalo, and after last year's offensive performance with the Redskins, it doesn't appear as though he would have learned any new tricks.

I believe he is head coach material, but since he still has Buffalo stink on him, he won't make too many "short lists".

Williams is coming back for '05, that's all I really care about right now. We'll deal with the future when the time comes.

As for strong oral agreements, they aren't worth the paper they are written on.

Your projection of the Redskins as a winning team with a sensible owner and fiscal sanity (salary cap heaven) means that lots has to change around here. You said that "most HC openings are for sh*thole teams". Please recall that the Washington Redskins have had three HC openings in the last four and a half years. And they've had a losing record over those years too. So at the moment, Williams seems to have accepted a DC job on a sh*thole team; why wouldn't he try to be a HC on a similar team if the opportunity was there?


Here's why Williams will stay on. With bonuses, he makes about $2M a year and there are more than a handful of HCs out there who make less than that. If someone came to him with a $5M per yer deal, my guess is that he would be off like a prom dress.

I think the 49ers were interested in interviewing Williams, not sure if there was any sort of formal offer for an interview but I remember something being mentioned that he wasn't interested.

And if someone were to offer him $5M a year, he would be crazy to not jump all over it, but I can't see anybody offering him that much.
