Carlos Rogers online journal
hey i was over at nflplayers.com and carlos rogers posted a message there abour gibbs. here it is:
http://www.nflplayers.com/players_ne...ection=journal Working With Gibbs 05/20/05 It was cool to meet Joe Gibbs for the first time. He's a true legend of the game. He's an older coach, and kind of reminds me of my old Auburn coach, Coach Tuberville. Both of them are older, really know football and are spiritual. So I know I'm going to feel right at home with the Redskins. I'm really looking forward to helping Coach Gibbs turn the team around and getting back on the winning track.

Re: Carlos Rogers online journal
i know. i can't explain the nfl networks' actions. i was at their website, it showed their lineup for nfl total access last week, everything was on the show but santana moss interview and the interview with carlos rogers and jason campbell. i don't know maybe there was a problem, maybe they decided they weren't good enough for the show, but i dont' know. it sucks, really, that they think we aren't quality material or whatever they want.

Re: Carlos Rogers online journal
What I like most about Rogers is his ability to blitz, tackle, stop the run, AND cover. Antrelle Rolle can tackle, but his coverage skills are questionable. Adam Jones can cover and hits bigger than his body would suggest, but I'm not sure he's as good in run support as Rogers. Fabian Washington runs really fast, but his "instincts" and tackling aren't as good as Rogers'. Basically, Rogers is not a role-player, but can do just about anything a DC could ask of a corner.

Re: Carlos Rogers online journal
Make no mistake Rogers is the good's, no doubt, he will be better than Smoot from day 1, and he's a Gibbs guy, hopefully Gibbs get's enough of his kind of players on the team that they will become the prevailing attitude, which will go a long way into keeping guy's like Taylor subdued, maybe it will even give him some direction with his life, he seem's to have no direction on which way to go.

Re: Carlos Rogers online journal
Let's not all start forgetting what Smoot brought to this team in terms of toughness, passion for winning and ecellent play.
Maybe Rogers will be better but he shouldn't really be touted as 'better than Smoot' before he has even played a competitive down as a Redskin - I think that's a bit disrespectful to Smoot.

One thing I know for sure, though. Smoot whiffed on an awful lot of corner blitzes, and I fully expect Rogers will provide a significant improvement in the effectiveness of that play, which is a staple of the Williams defense. If there's one reason that could justify allowing a 'true Redskin' like Smoot to walk in free agency, while spending a top-10 draft pick to replace him with a less-experienced, yet nearly as expensive model, it would be the fact that Williams prefers defensive backs than perform more like linebackers in the tackling and blitzing departments. While Smoot had certainly improved his tackling over the past couple of years, he wasn't what you'd call a 'physical presence' as a hitter or tackler. One could say that Rogers has the potential to be a better all-around cornerback than Smoot ever was or ever will be. Personally, I think Rogers could become one of the top five cornerbacks in the league within his first three seasons. I'm not sure he will represent an immediate upgrade over Smoot from day one-- there's usually a pretty ugly introductory period for rookie cornerbacks-- but I have little doubt that his potential as a 'complete cornerback' far exceeds what Smoot brought to the table. I also think Rogers brings a professional attitude and personality, so in that respect, I don't think he will be a downgrade from Smoot, though he still has to prove his heart and desire on the field on gameday. Playing through injuries really tests a player's mettle, and Smoot brought toughness by the truckload. |

Re: Carlos Rogers online journal
Smoot was a very good player for us for a couple of years. Rodgers hasn't played one down in the nfl yet. He hasn't even been in a training camp yet. Let's not get too crazy saying he is better than Smoot quite yet.
That being said I love the pick and I am glad we got him over Rolle or Jones... Still reeling from the 25th pick though...

I too am sure he has the tools. His confidence and attitude will heighten under Williams as well.

Re: Carlos Rogers online journal
I definitely see Rogers as being a better fit than Smoot. With Rogers and Springs we'll have two physical corners who can also get to the QB when needed.
Speaking of Springs I don't think we give the guy enough love around here. 6 sacks and 5 ints last year, it's a shame he wasn't selected to the Pro Bowl. |

Re: Carlos Rogers online journal
I agree Matty. I was worried when we got him that he would be a liability with his past injury history and he definitely performed at a Pro Bowl level.
