Over half of all guns in the world are owned by people in the US.

A majority of mass killings take place in our country.

Other countries with high per capita gun ownership have a disproportionally small amount of gun deaths compared to the US.

This is all fact. If gun control isn't the answer...and I suspect it really isn't the "answer" more than it is a helpful ingredient to a much larger and more complicated solution.. Then what is? All the NRAers...what is the answer?

There is something very wrong here and while one side may not have the right answer at least they seem to get that there's a problem. The other side seem oblivious.
Their answer is often... more guns.

Craziness.

Last I checked, the NRA is about more guns with concealed carry, and maintaining instant background checks, and much longer prison sentences for crimes committed with guns. I'm not crazy about concealed carry, but working on the the rest is part of the solution, IMO. Still have to do something about the high end guns that are used for the sporadic horrific massacre, and the cheap handguns that are used kill a lot of innocent people every year. While keeping in mind that a gun doesn't fire or mishandle itself.

edit: Having a registration just to keep up with guns in proximity to people with mental health issues might be a solution, but there's obstacles to tracking both. To not "infringe" on a Constitutional right that an overwhelming majority of gun owners don't abuse, any registration shouldn't be turned into a burden for law-abiding citizens, like the ridiculous DC gun control laws that have done nothing to reduce violence using guns.

If you think a gun ban would solve gun crime you're either uneducated on the topic or lying to yourself and others.

John Lott- More Guns, Less Crime.

Military grade weapons have no place in any home, however.

That's what I think most of us can agree on.

Not sure that any reasonable person is talking about a gun ban, just more strict regulation is all.

Then why do countries with less gun ownership have less crime?

Would you like to name a country rather than just throw that quote out there?

I believe it was a question not a quote. It was meant as an honest question. If you dispute the basis of it I'd be happy to understand your reasoning.

It was both you said they have less crime and then asked why.

They probably have tougher laws on every crime in general. That's what you need to be looking at.

The US has all ways had guns so what esle has changed. The left never wants to look at that side of the issue and wants to put all the blame on the guns.

Re: Gun Control Thread- Should we?

I'd like to be clear here:

I have long been somewhat opposed to greater gun control because many of the same reasons that have been stated.

But upon closer examination of gun ownership statistics and some quality time spent reasoning I am finding it harder and harder to rectify the fact the we as a nation have more guns than everyone else in the whole world combined yet we still have vast amount of crime often disproportional to other countries. The argument that guns stop crime is on pretty shaky ground and I have yet to see anyone that can show why we have all these guns yet crime isn't much better. I'd love to understand why.

Well a good example is that a kid can steal several cars and never serve a day in jail. I had a car stolen by a kid who had also stolen 3 prior cars. Never served anytime for any of those crimes. The only reason he served anytime for stealing my car is because he had turned 18. My guess is if that happened in any outher country he would have been in jail.

Yeah, because our prison system is full of guys incarcerated for drug charges. Legalize drugs and you free up a system to put away REAL bad guys, not ones that tobacco/alcohol/pharmaceutical companies want locked up for competing with their products.

...and shit like this. Ten years for hacking?

Hollywood hacker sentenced to 10 years in prison - Yahoo! News

Nah...we didn't have bigger criminals roaming around out there that needed the space.

I think I stated a a big reason why these mass murders will continue and it's not because of guns. Nobody even talked about it or even commented. Why?

Listen to this forensic psychiatrist at near the end of this clip. Just listen to him. Hear him. Soak that in......now....put the pieces of many of the past mass murders together.

1) Columbine - Black trench coats, armored, anti-heros, going out in blaze of glory
At last we know why the Columbine killers did it. - Slate Magazine

2) Virginia Tech - Black military type gear, armored, anti-hero, going out in blaze of glory

3) Aurora Theater shooting - Black military type gear, armored, anti-hero, going out in blaze of glory (this guy punked out on killing himself)

4) Sandy Hook theater - Dressed in black fatigues, armored, anti-hero, going out in blaze of glory.

I want all of you to stop and think about this for a second. Look at the similarities here. They all have several things in common.

1) All planned at length
2) All sought to make a splash with the media
3) All see themselves as anti-heros
4) All have psychiatric problems or signs of it

In each case, they seem to try and one up each other to get the maximum press coverage once they are gone.

Our media is feeding these types of individuals. Like FD said, guns have been around for quite sometime, so why is it now that they are occurring. Well, when you eliminate common denominators, the only thing left between now and then is the explosion of the information age. Now, what once would be considered local even national news is now put on the world stage for all to see.
