Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread

Lawrence is a great QB. BUT a lot of his "greatness" has come from rolling up big numbers against competition that was totally outclassed by the Athletes Clemson put on the field. But when he has been in the big games against pro-level competition, his body of work is not so shiny. He will still be the Number One pick int he draft. But tonite's game shows he has some warts.

Always loved the “experts” drooling over his 4 TDs in a half against The Citadel....🧐. Obviously he’s a really good QB, but the notion of tanking for him two years in advance is a little over the top.

I just don't see him on the same level as Burrow was last year. I look at his games against LSU and the other night, two times against top competition and he was not the best QB on the field. He was CLEARLY outplayed in both.

Mac Jones looks like a better passer. Obviously not a better athlete or runner, but a better drop back passer.

I just want want some one with more than 2 years starting and it would also be better if they played in a pro style offense... Haskins was a mistake I am a little leery of Heisman trophy winners because of pas history but that does not mean the won't work out... I like Mac Jones also. I think Lawrence, Fields and Wilson will be gone by the time we pick unless we trade up. Mac Jones may also be off the board as well.

And don't judge Fields by the body of work from other Ohio State QB"s. He is on the same level as Lawrence. Those two have been ranked 1 & 2 for practically their whole lives as athletes. And they are now both 1 and 1 against each other.

But perhaps the biggest difference between Fields and past OSU QB's is Ryan Day. Ray does not run a college "gimmicky" kind of offense. He develops his QB's inside of a program that uses a NFL style offense. So I think Fields will enter the pros with a different kind of mentality than previous OSU QB's.

I agree. But I think it is closer than it appears at first blush.

Good. I hope that's the first of many more to come. Scherff, Darby, Sundberg...

So if you're the Jets do you take Fields at #2 or stick with Darnold and address other needs?

If they take Fields, presuming the projections see us missing out on a top QB prospect, maybe go after Darnold after the draft when he's likely 'cheaper' to obtain? Bring in someone like Tyrod Taylor and have them compete?

Again, this is just on the assumption we have little or no prospect of a franchise QB when we pick AND we don't pay over the odds.

I'd give Darnold 1 more year with a real coach. They have the number 2 pick and a shit ton of cap space. They can improve the offense drastically if they draft well and sign a couple guys. I think they'll definitely sign 1 of them big FA receivers.

Re: The Too Soon 2021 NFL Draft Thread

I hope we draft the best QB still available with our first pick.

I am not convinced Alex Smith will come back next year. My impression of Allen is that he’s probably a journeyman but a decent backup QB. I’m not sure about Heinickle except that he has potential even though he is “short” at 6’. Let Heinickle, the rookie first pick and Allen compete for the QB spot.

Until we get a very mobile, franchise QB, we will not be able to balance our excellent defense with an equally good offense.

No one that has played QB for us this year is the future. Alex needs to retire and Allen/Heinicke are competing for who is No. 2 for most of next year (that's a fantastic and needed job, and well paid).

I'd add a true #2 WR to take heat of Scary, and another TE to partner Thomas. We have the backfield (though I'd be tempted to add a bruiser to replace Barber), we just need the targets for a new QB to throw to. Can't help wondering if AS had more guys to target, whether his passing stats would have been much better?...
