Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I don't have time to read all 150 posts in this thread, but I wonder if the $1M we were to pay Marshall had anything to do with it.
It is curious that we would hang on to other lesser players like Khary Campbell and Sartz and let Lemar go. He wasn't much of a MLB, but OLB pretty well. Godfrey is a solid player. I'm hoping that bringing him in isn't an indication the Marcus' injury is worse than reported.

More than money and age though, the Redskins must have seen or not seen something lately with Marshall that made them think they need someone right now. (on a side note, I kind of like this WR they signed Jerel Myers. He could be a good #5 receiver)

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I don't like it. Why cut him now when we don't have to? What happens if Rocky blows out his acl next week against the Ravens...we will look real stupid. Just like when we cut Bramlet and JC hurts his knee the next week and Brunnel continues to look like crap.
Or another team could lose their WLB and then we could get something for him. Just like Atlanta jumping on Bramlet...surely they would have given us something for him or at least pursued Brunnel more. It just doesn't make sense to cut someone with value now. And don't give me the old 'we were be nice by letting him go early' bit. This is after all a business, as we have been repeatedly reminded. Also, how does the rest of the team react to losing one of their own for what appears to be hardly any reason. way to look out for your 'core Redskins'. Finally, I have seen Marshal make big plays for this team. Everyone else has yet to show that to me - potential or no.

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Played at LSU, most recently tearing up the AFL (not hard to do I suppose). About 5'11" 190ish. Big play type of receiver, good deep threat. His biggest strength is probably his speed after the catch. Dante Hall-esque with better size

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Let's see what Williams says about it. This was his call. He may give us some clue. My position at this point is the simplest explanation is the best: he got outplayed. This would make more sense if they had not brought in Godfrey which makes it seem like they are not completely satisfied with the play of the others.
As for the timing, I think they wanted to avoid putting him to the curb with the rest of the first cut garbage. It's a small concession to his service for the team that will be better for him. No, it's not the necessarly the savviest or most cutthroat thing they could have done. But it's not likely they would have gotten that much, if anything, for him. If you are willing to trade a guy at this point, chances are you are going to cut him at some point anyway and other teams know this.

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Personally, I thought Marshall had value since he could play Middle and outside. I also thought that he looked pretty good in the Steelers scrimmage. I highly doubt that this was a cap move so there has to be a good reason, right!?!?

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
why wasn't Marshall treated as a core redskin? he did play well against Pitts, and can play more then one position, which gives him value. i cant wait to hear the explanation

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Lets be honest, we won't really be able to tell whether this was good or bad until the end of the year when we compare:
(1) How he did on whatever team he will have signed on with, and (2) How we did without him, especially at his position. Remember how we fumed at Lavar Leaving??? |

Re: Lamar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
I mentioned H.B. Blades. Blades has showed the most potential in preseason and has been responsible for most of the tackles which still has not allowed a TD in the second half of the preseason games. Take a look at the hit he put on Griffith in the Tennesse game. Marshall is not the only veteran who will be cut in the near future. I think Rock Cartwright, Ade Jimoh and Derrick Blaylock will be cut. Marcus Mason has a good chance to make the team if the Cartwright and Blaylock continue to struggle.

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Lemar is a good player but not a starter. And other younger LB's have outplayed him so far. Godfrey is a disciple of Williams from their Titans days together. Even if he never gets in a game, it's a quality move.

Re: Lemar Marshall released for Randall Godfrey??
Why the fuck did we cut Marshall for this guy? The Chargers released him for some chronic health issues. He is old as dirt on top of that. I didn't think Marshall had deteriorated that bad in his play. Even if it was a money thing he would have been a great backup for Rocky or any other LB for that matter. Godfrey had chronic hamstring problems, what is upgrade here?
