We got hit pretty hard and lost three really big trees. One fell into my neighbors yard and the other two are in the back of our lot so I can cut them up a little each weekend. I have several buddies who want some for fire wood so we will cut it up and rent a splitter. |

There are always some locals that are hardheaded. They ignore the mandatory evacuation and stay in there homes. I can (somewhat)understand staying in your home and looking after your own property, but getting in your van and sightseeing during while it's hitting you? I'm wondering if they are truly locals or people that moved here and have little to no experience with hurricanes. Most locals I know that have places at the beach don't hang around. The move inland until the storm passes.

That's usually the norm with surfers. They like to take advantage of the big waves prior to the storm rolling through. Most are smart enough to get out of dodge before it arrives though. I emphasize "most"....lol

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
Back in my surfing days i went out in some pretty nasty seas. I remember on day going out and the waves where hitting the top of the fishing piers. By the time we got out and realized how stupid it was and went back in we had drifted 2 1/2 miles down the beach. That was stupid.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
I took my backup propane tank to get re-filled so I'd have 2 tanks to cook with in case of a power loss. (meat, meat and more meat) My grill has a sideburner for boiling water too.
I have a huge case of bottled water in the attic for emergencies. Ended up with about 3 inches of rain, some tame 30 MPH gusts and loss of power for a morning. Dodged it all. Just some leaves to sweep off the deck. Family on LI also got a lot less than expected. Hope everyone here was and is safe. Coincidentally, my newborn daughter's (born 2 weeks ago) middle name is IRENE. I was born during a tornado in MD that took out the bridge to the hospital too.

Sounds like everyone is doing well for the most part. Just got power back at about 5am. Had the generator running, but it only keeps about 35% of the house up. Fortunately no damage to my neighborhood, some flooding but it's all receeded already.

Those are incredible photos in the link posted above. Wow.
I had turned on Dish Earth (Dish Network has a 24-hr view of the earth from a space satellite) and I could clearly see the hurricane as it was approaching NC. It was HUGE. Amazing view.

The dumbass of the week award goes to CNN's journalist Orrin H. Pilkey. When will we ever learn the lessons of hurricanes? - CNN.com Guys, we shouldn't build any developments where natural disasters occur. So, lets cut out all of California, Florida, Texas, Louisiana, South Carolina, North Carolina...hell, all of the east coast. The midwest (tornadoes). I think that leaves North Dakota as a viable option. Some people are truly idiots.

Re: F Hurricanes...not the football team (but f them too)
My aunt and uncle live in southern Vermont. Their little town got pounded. A bridge collapsed, basically everyone is without power, several houses crushed by large trees... Fortunately they are ok, but not everyone in their town can say the same.
