Re: London Fletcher re-signs with Redskins

I understand the fact that the NFL is a business and that Fletcher is a 37 year old undersized linebacker. But I do think that NC_Skins is undervalueing the importance of leadership in the clubhouse. Fletcher is the team's only leader.

Look at the Wizards and how they put John Wall immediately in as the clubhouse leader in his rookie year, didn't really work out. That can't happen with RGIII, you have to protect your investment. Now with Fletch on the team we can draft a MLB to learn from him. You can take a risk on a player like Vontaze Burfict because you have the leadership of London to help keep Burfict in line. For a losing team leadership comes at a premium. These aren't brainless droids like on Madden, you need someone to be a coach on the field and make plays on field, you need quality veterans.

Why don't we get a bunch of panties and laugh at them until the season starts?

We all good? Is a group hug needed? C'mon ... bring it in guys.

First off, you have to remember this is a business. Second, you have to remember there is only a certain amount of resources a team can tie up on salaries.

Ok, once you grasp those two concepts, then you'll understand that paying a 37 year old linebacker huge sums of money isn't smart. I don't care if he is the leader of a team. I don't care if he is the face of the franchise. I don't care if he did lead the NFL in tackles. It's not what he has done, it's what he will do. I think history shows us quite well that 37+ linebackers really aren't going to produce at the level that they did 5 years ago. Do you actually think that Fletcher can cover RBs/TEs like he did 5 years ago? Not sure what team you were watching last year, but I recall Fletcher slow to a many of plays and it wasn't because of lack of effort or heart. It's his age, his speed and it sure isn't going to get better over the course of the next year. A 37 year old isn't going to beat a 23 year old RB on the edge. A 37 year old isn't going to keep up with a Gronkowski.

I understand you guys are huge fans of him and so am I. There isn't a person on this team that has been more valuable to this franchise than Fletcher. That doesn't mean you just throw tons of cash at him because of what he's meant to us. He got paid rewarding during his time here and will so on this next contract.

You think Fletcher meant more to our team than Peyton Manning meant to the Colts? They made a business decision (smart one) and so did we by not overpaying Fletcher. I'm very satisfied with the numbers that he signed for and think it's funny he could have gotten more had he not fired his agent. Talk about a huge backfire.

Let's put away all this talk about "hobbled" linebacker and raise our mugs to welcome a man back who's put it all on the line for this team even though many others haven't.
Great post. I'm hoping they draft his replacement... and that person, whomever he is gets on the field this year. So when Fletch hangs it up we'll have someone ready.

Sadly you might be right. But hopefully Kerrigan and Orakpo start to take over that role on defense...and of course RG3 on offense.

I don't know what to think of Burfict, but your ideas here make a lot of sense to me. Fletcher's leadership/maturity will help Griffin ease into his leadership role on the field and in the locker room at least, which is pretty valuable considering the constant media attention he'll endure.

Lorenzo Alexander. He's already a leader and special teams captain. If he takes well to ILB, he could be Fletchers replacement.

Im late to this discussion, but excellent post.

Fletcher is clearly an anomaly in terms of his production and health when it comes to his age and size and other easily measureable physicality’s. He cant really be compared to other 37 year old linebackers in a physical sense. Its just a bad comparison.

In terms of his leadership and face of the franchise stuff, he is priceless. Especially for a team that has under gone major changes to coaching, personal, schemes, and management over the last 5 years. While it may be unreasonable to “pay him whatever it takes”, I think paying him whatever we can is more than fair. He means too much to our team on a multitude of levels. And with RGIII coming in I couldn’t agree more that having the quality of person that Fletcher is as part of the team, couldn’t be more important in developing and protecting our new investment.
