Sorry for going off-topic.
I personally am willing to sacrifice NO rights. Our govt is F... up and needs HELP. I don't see it coming anytime soon. When we rid ourselves of politicians, and care about something other than $$$$$$, then we will be governed by a government FOR THE PEOPLE!

Yes. But it's hard to answer your inferred question here. Cause I do believe we need to detain those that pose a possible threat, but I do not agree with holding someone indefinitely just because of suspicion.

You, a citizen of America (assuming you are a citizen), could be arrested and held without charge by the government for a very long time (perhaps forever), simply if they deem you an "enemy combatant". Due process? Forget about it. The "Patriot Act" (what an ironic name) has given the government the power to perform unconstitutional acts for the sake of fighting terrorism.
Yes, I am a US citizen, born and raised in the Boston area.
I will absolutely agree with your thoughts about that being against your freedoms / rights as an American. However, just like I am OK with the searches at the airport, I am OK with someone being stopped and questioned if they deem the person to be a threat. If it walks like a duck....well you know the saying. Again, I do agree that it can and does go too far. At what point do you say you are no longer protecting the rights of millions to retract the rights of one or a few?

However, let's assume that I do incur costs on the government for harming myself.
How is this even possible? Unless we're talking about jail time, or the judicial system.

I agree.
We as a society need to be taught to be self responsible. I feel like I go through life with no safety net, but there are many people that feel that the government is their safety net. That's not right. Those people will purposely fall into the net because it's the lazy way out.

Re: Legalize it!

I think the premise of Ben's quote is regarding a Govt that works. I view much of our Gov't as unworkable

That depends on your definition of rights. Do you feel that the added security at airports are sacrificing your rights for instance?

Yes and no. They have definitely lost their path (thanks to the dems...shit that slipped out), and need a serious overhaul from people that actually love this country and it's ideals. We have not seen true caring politicians in decades, and now that just about everyone is corrupt in some way, even if there was someone that was truely special in terms of loving this country and what it stands for, that person would be run out of town on a rail. The government needs help...and a lot of it. But we are short on real suggestions on how to fix it.

No, we a government that does not promote self responsibility. Our government wants us to be reliant on them, because power is the root of all evil...how do you get power? Money is one way. So yes, you are right, but they are seeking the power ultimately.

So does that mean it's a privilege? Smoking weed is not a right because a scared government made it so. They took away the rights of individuals by doing so. So while it is illegal, I do believe it is my right to smoke it.

I am guilty of generalizing a bit.
You can believe what you like regarding the weed, and your right to smoke it. The corrupt govt does not look at it like that, and will put your ass in the slam for it.....maybe

Absolutely, 100% agree!
I honestly feel the downfall of humans will be the fact that they have been allowed to be nonselfreliant. (is that a word?)
For as much as I bitch that people need to be self responsible, I know in my heart that people are lazy by nature and will not change. It saddens me to say it.
I feel if there was a politician with the gusto to take all those safety nets away, he would be met with so much resistance that it would be impossible to overcome, and we would likely see an assassination attempt.

Re: Legalize it!

From Entrez PubMed

Quote:
Saliva or "oral fluid" has been presented as an alternative matrix in the establishment of drug exposure. The noninvasive collection of a saliva sample, which is relatively easy to perform and can be achieved under close supervision, is one of the most important benefits in a driving under the influence situation. Moreover, the presence of delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) in oral fluid is a better indication of recent use than when the drug is detected in urine, so there is a higher probability that the subject is experiencing pharmacological effects at the time of sampling. At 3 check points organized by the Swiss police in Bern, 61 drivers were tested for the presence of drugs of abuse using the Drugwipe 5 device. In parallel, oral fluid was collected with the Intercept DOA Oral Specimen Collection device and tested by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) after methylation of THC (limit of quantitation 1 ng/mL). The Drugwipe device identified 1 exposed driver, but with GC-MS, 18 drivers tested positive. THC concentrations in the Intercept buffer ranged from 2.1 to 205.1 ng/mL. These concentrations represent about 1/2 to 1/3 the authentic THC concentrations in oral fluid because of the dilution by the blue liquid of the device. Two main limitations of oral fluid were 1. the amount of matrix collected is smaller when compared to urine and 2. the levels of drugs in urine are higher than in oral fluid. A current limitation of the use of this specimen for roadside testing is the absence of a suitable immunoassay that detects the parent compound in sufficiently low concentrations.

Yeah, I know...but I don't deal and have a spotless record, not even a speeding ticket...so it would be a slap on the wrist at worst as a misdemeanor. But considering I don't have any contact with any dealer, and I do it privately with a friend that has no contact with any dealer, I doubt I would be in any danger. Also, I live next to a sheriff that LOVES the stuff, even though he has no clue that I dabble in it.

I also know, that is the slight risk I take, and if that means going to the slammer for it, I will blame no one but myself, cause I am a self responsible person!

Unfortunatley, you and those like you are paying the price for those that are not.
On another note, years ago, I knew a cop that lived in a typical subdivision. He had a "faux" corn field in his backyard that hid a respectful Mary J field in the center, for his own use. He used to store the harvested "product" in tennis ball cans. At one time I counted how many he had. 176 FULL tennis ball cans of POT. What a trip

176 FULL tennis cans? Jesus, that's enough to pacify Iraq.

Thanks HOG1. It's nice to know I am not the only one that feels that way.
I know the people in Lee county feel that way since 80% or so are republican, but are the people in Collier county as dedicated to that premise as well?

(FYI- I travel to Fort Myers / Cape Coral twice a year, and I co-own a condo in Naples...in fact my mother is there right now.)
