My understanding regarding Glenn is that, as a former halfback, he has fine athletic skills and would make a fast linebacker. Also he seems to have enjoyed hitting people like a linebacker should. He also has not had the time at LB to develop bad habits and thus would be a blank slate which Blache could turn into the kind of player he wants.

I'm not defending the Glenn pick as much as I am saying that the FO MAY have had some valid reasons for picking him.

In the end, Orakpo was our pick and atleast one reporter/analyst (Skip Bayless) thinks Orakpo was the best player in the entire draft. I wouldnt go that far, but he was by far the best available player at 13. He's a huge upgrade over Daniels and Wynn and i'm excited to see him play.

Calling Bayless an analyst is very kind of you.

I think that any improvement he would be to Daniels/Wynn is largely irrelevant since he won't be playing their position. Neither of those guys were ever going to play on third downs, when it is expected that Orakpo would get most of his playing time in 09. I think we worked him out at LB to see if he had any value added in addition to rush end. If we had thought of him as a LE type, there would have been no reason to try him out as an LB at workouts.

It seems to take a year or so to learn how to rush the passer from the left side anyway (since the fundamentals are reversed), so I would expect Daniels to be able to pressure the QB more often from that position than Orakpo, at least in 2009.

Day 1 = B+ (take away points for trading 2nd round picks, but Orakpo was the best available and he fills a need.)

Day 2 = C- (failed to address the offensive line in the 5th round when some 2nd - 3rd round prospects where still available. Marko Mitchell in the 7th could be a steal)

Overall = C

Did well first day, but tanked on the 2nd day. FO seemed to lose focus, drafted injured players that did even show up on most draft websites, and that is never a good look. A few more cerebral picks and we'd have gotten an A easily.

Pick #13: Brian Orakpo DE Texas
Pros:
-Good speed
-Great backside pursuit skills
-Good physical tools
-Shows a recognition of building the Dline from the team(I hope).
-Could be great in the right system
Cons:
-Undersized
-Questions about his motivation
-Questionable weight gain
-Terrible fit for Blache’s system
-Usual question marks about Texas defenders/Dlinemen.
-Technique questions

Overall Comment: He has undeniable potential, but there’s just far too many question marks about him to get excited about the pick. If Blache is replaced and a more aggressive system comes in(3-4 c3?), Orakpo could find a role as a dedicated rush Lb.
Grade: With the status Quo, D+. In the right system C+.

Overall Comment: He needs work, but there’s talent there. He needs to show that he’s a ballhawk to earn playing time. That’s his strength. My complaint with this pick is that we passed on a lot of Oline talent for him.

He’d better be a diamond in the rough, or he’s the next Manny White. I have a feeling that he’ll just be a special teamer. Also undefendable was passing on guys like Jasper Brinkley in a trade down for him.

Overall comment/grade: A waste of a draft. If Orakpo doesn’t pan out, then we really screwed this one up. If he does, then this is probably a clone of the 2007 Landry draft(which wasn’t that good in retrospect). The 2nd day was so bad that the UDFA signees seem to be better acquisitions than any of those picks. Also, with the Broncos offering Jarvis Moss around for a 7th, I would have used that Eddie Williams pick for Moss to hedge our bets with Orakpo.

Chase Daniel, QB, Missouri: Small, not the greatest arm strength, but smart, a leader and can frustrate defenses by creating plays. Could unseat Brennan for the 3rd Qb spot, probably bound for the PS. 40% chance.
Antonio Dixon, DT, Miami (FL): Big with good speed, raw and needs work. Needs to show something to even make the PS. 1% chance
Doug Dutch, CB, Michigan: Raw with little experience playing CB. Doubtful for the PS with Barnes/Tyron. 1% chance.
Devin Frischknecht, TE Washington State: Hback prospect. Not really a good pass catcher. Doubtful for the PS. 1% chance.

I also think that the FO will be looking for some cap casualty cast-offs to reload areas of need like LB and O-line. It's their MO for some strange reason, and it has not worked very well.
