It was crazy because I was talking to one of my boys on the phone about the Skins and he was like, " Oh shit, no young...Get the fuck out of here " So I asked him what was he talking about and he said, " Joe Gibbs retired, ESPN just said it. Then I refreshed my Warpath window and saw it, still didn't believe it. Then I went to ESPN and I was done. He started talking about Brian Billick and I was really mad. I told him I didn't "want to hear that shit right now" I was done, this is the second time I've gotten this news. I thought he was going to leave though. After the Seattle game I just had a feeling that the team was headed in the right direction and that he did what he came to do. You add that to his ailing grandson and you can understand it happening. I hoped he would stay, even signing an extention but as the old addage goes, all good things must come to an end.

Hail To The Redskins !!!

Excuse me while I go to the corner for a while and cry.
I fell apart at work and couldn't get my act together, so I left. I'm a pretty tough cookie, but also a very passionate person. To say I'm passionate about Joe Gibbs would be an understatement. I just hoped he would finish out and I guess I selfishly wanted that 5th year to prepare for his departure.

But...DAMN!! I really didn't see this coming. Resigning as HC doesn't completely surprise me but I thought for sure he'd be President still. The Wrong President Resigned (free sig, there for the taking)

Seriously though, I'm admittedly upset. Not with Gibbs, but just with the fact that he's gone sooner than expected. And for the second time we don't have the opportunity to prepare for it and give him a proper send off (farewell tour)? It's how he wants it I suppose, but it's a shame that we spent so much time dissecting every aspect of his performance (down to the most minute details), yet never really took the time-or had the opportunity to take the time-to appreciate that our team, our beloved Washington Redskins, were led by one of the true legends of all of sports. I think a lot of us have taken what we had in him for granted. And had he said "I'm back for one more year and that's it" then maybe we would have spent time thanking him. You can call for a change and an infusion of youth all you want, that's fine. But I don't think there is a single fan of the NFL who can deny or refuse to appreciate the impact he had on the team, the city, and the entire league.

At the same time, sometimes news like this just needs to hit you hard then you need to just rip it off like a band-aid instead of letting it linger.

Now, as to the future. I haven't heard much, all I know at this point is that he'll be a part owner/advisor. But the advisor part will be a bit more impactful than it sounds supposedly. Still he won't be in a day to day management capacity.

Now, why did he resign? Haven't heard much there either. A couple of things I have heard, he was tempted to resign last year after his grandson was diagnosed with leukemia. However, he was upset (angry?) at how the season went and how he and the team were perceived. So he wanted at least one more year to get them back to respectability. Then when Sean Taylor died, he started reevaluating things and wondering where his priorities were that he would pass up the chance to be with his real family to take care of the Redskins family. Something else I was told late last night some of his top assistants, not Saunders or Williams, but I did hear the name Bugel (don't know how true it is, my source on that one isn't reliable), weren't keen on coaching much longer and Gibbs wanted to leave with them. There's also another rumor that Snyder wasn't keen on giving some of those guys extensions like he supposedly was with Gibbs.

Anyhow, that's all I've heard so far...which is really not much. As always, if I hear anything I'll tell...some of you.

Honestly though, when the season began did anyone think if Gibbs resigned it would NOT be the biggest Redskins news of the year?

RIP Sean
I find it real hard to believe that Snyder did not want to extend Bugel. Maybe Don B. cause he really has no role. But not Bugel. Buges has done an amazing job and I think Snyder has a real fondness for him. I remember when OBC was having trouble protecting the QB and Snyder hired Buges as a consultant. I think Buges wants to be with his family too. His daughter just had her arm taken off.

Hey, you're not the only one. As several have pointed out here, I am extremely passionate about the Skins, I live and breathe Skins, and this felt like a punch in the gut. I do not blame Gibbs at all, but like you, I was hoping for that last year on the contract to prepare.
Luckily I am off today to absorb this...it seems like the word of the day for me is just "DAMN".

I think it was the Breaux's and Burns' types of the staff that were not exactly being welcome back with open arms.

It's all you can say...other than "WOW"....followed by damn. A great coach, and an even better man. This really makes the Dallas game my dad and I got to go to even more special.

Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President

Crazy! Ever since I joined this board I've said Gibbs should move beyond the HC (part of the reason I joined actually) but after I really thought through it I really hoped he would stay on w/ the organization - President, GM, whatever. This is a shock. I completely understand w/ the rest of you how he is looking to be w/ family but to completely retire? All I can figure is that he did not want any official position - maybe he's an all or nothing guy.

Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President

I am not concerned about the coaching part of Gibbs leaving. We have the best coaching staff in the NFL and hopefully Snyder will not feel the need to make his typical splash of announcing some big name coach from outside the organization. Dan please promote from within.

My big concern in the front office. I was going back and forth with Smootsmack yesterday on another thread about my concerns in the Front Office. We finally both agreed that with Gibbs around there is no immediate problem. Well now with Gibbs leaving we are back with the two headed draft failures in Cerratto/Snyder. These two guys wrote the book on how to mismanage player personnel and salary cap for an NFL Organization. Their track record is not very good. I do not want them running the front office. This is not good.

I feel like the wind as been knocked out of me too. I'll probably feel better after I hear him speak. Right now, I just need someone to tell me not to worry and everything will be ok.

God, I sound like such a sap. I really need to get it together. I hereby reserve the right to go back through this thread and edit my posts to reflect what an emotional retard I am.

But... that may be exactly the kind of special advisory role Gibbs will play from this point forward to Dan and Vinny. I'm not willing to accept that those two guys haven't learned anything from 4 seasons of Gibbs' leadership.

Please no more Snyderatto runing the Redskins.
They have proven to be failures.
Why does Snyder have one set of rules for ability to do your job for players and coaches and another for him and Vinny?
I am not willing to accept them running the team again after the track record they left behind them. Gibbs is just now turning the team around from the mess they created.

If you can't be emotional now when the Skins are in disarray, when can you?

Re: Gibbs to Resign as HC/President

i'm not upset at all. I'm almost happy. I think most of my posts show that I love gibbs and want him to stay but if he is ready to go then more power to him. He wouldn't leave us unless he felt that we were heading in the right direction. I'm not happy to see him go but happy that he feels he can go. Gibbs put all the pieces together. We are a FAR better team then we were when he came here. He did a fantastic job and i am happy for him. I'm not REALLY surprised and i wasn't when i heard it, especially after it was hinted at after his press conference yesterday.

Its all good. We have gone to the playoffs twice in the last 3 years and that is much better than the skins have been my whole life. Whats not to like. I love our players. Really, there are teams with crazy ass stupid players but we have character. We are fun. Every team in the NFL has a different type of character but i honestly like ours the best. All of our players are fun and good guys. Just look at the interviews from today and you can see our team is mature. I don't think many players act this way when their coach retires. They had a lot of respect for Gibbs and what he has done here. Rock said the team is like a family. I just hope it stays that way. I think it will if GW is our coach.

If we promote from within then gibbs is a fucking magician. He comes in and fixes up the team and slowly backs away and prepares us for his leaving. This year he took a step back in his duties and got us ready for when he was going to leave. That is awesome. He set this team up for future greatness. He is the man. Today is a good day. We should celebrate gibbs and nothing more today. Today isn't a bad day at all.

He didn't come back to win championships but he came back to put us in position to win in the future.
