Re: Haslett to accept Defensive Coordinator

yeah!?!? /confusion. I don't know, this is not anything but a wait and see, it could be a success, failure, or just average...in other words failure. Hopefully he knows how to utilize the talent...Haynesworth, Orakpo, Carter, Fletcher, Landry, Horton...the list goes on, if he can harness the ability of all the individuals then we should have a good defense going forward

Re: Haslett to accept Defensive Coordinator

Outside of looking at some relatively meaningless rankings does anyone have any real insight as to what Haslett brings to the table as DC? I'm kinda getting tired of hearing about how much he sucks without hearing any good reasons to back up that thinking.

A little nugget from JC:

NFL: Odds against run-oriented New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens in divisional round - ESPN

Q: Can you see the Redskins being a 3-4 defense? You said earlier this year that success in a 3-4 is dependent on finding a talented nose tackle -- well we have the best in Albert Haynesworth supposedly, and Brian Orakpo looks like he would succeed as a DeMarcus Ware-type 3-4 OLB. It seems like a natural move to me.

A: That's why Shanahan hired Jim Haslett. He brings the 3-4 scheme from his days as defensive coordinator of the Pittsburgh Steelers. One of the first things Shanahan wanted to do was switch to a 3-4. Haslett talked with Shanahan throughout the season about joining his staff with an aggressive 3-4 scheme that features plenty of blitzes. Orakpo already has one season as a rushing linebacker in a 4-3. He shouldn't have any problem adjusting to a 3-4. It's a good fit.

Good post. I generally trust Clayton's judgment.

Re: Haslett to accept Defensive Coordinator

Without Orakpo and Chris Wilson, we probably wouldn't have the personnel, but with them, it's not an issue.

NT Aubrayo Franklin is a UFA for San Francisco, and while I generally don't like to pay guys coming off career years, salary structure among DL players is so whacky it hardly matters. The highest payed player in the Eagles front seven is...Darren Howard.

Who plays the inside linebacker positions? Fletch seems too small.

Re: Haslett to accept Defensive Coordinator

I heard he has 4.4 or 4.5 speed I can't remember tho this kid will be something special and Berry, Suh, & McClain they are the three safest picks in the draft hands down.

I'd imagine Fletch, Blades, and McIntosh would all see about equal reps. I'd also like to add a player with experience in the scheme at low cost.

It's hard to honestly see Fletcher as an every down player at age 35, no matter what scheme we play. For two years now, he's been very well protected within a scheme. It goes both ways though. We could afford to protect him because we knew he would not miss tackles even if he was the only guy at the ball.

In the 3-4, Fletcher would be marginalized, but he absolutely could do the job.

Here's Scouts' take on Franklin:
Quote:
Comment: Franklin has the strength and leverage skills to be effective against the run. He does a good job of recognizing blocking schemes and is quick to attack with his hands. He is tough to move off the ball due his low center of gravity and his ability to stack inside. He does a good job of occupying blocks and allowing linebackers to make plays. He has limited range on the outside. He is also somewhat limited as a pass-rusher due to a lack of speed and moves. He relies primarily on power to create an inside push and has an effective bull rush.
He seems to have had solid back to back years:
2008 46 tkl, 33 solo, 1 sacks, 2 ff
2209 36 tkl, 25 solo, 2 sacks, 1 int

I would imagine that he'd be a younger option than Casey Hampton and less expensive than Vince Wilfork.
